The History of Buttercupland

It started with the idea of a  buttercup...

Once upon a time in a land not so far away and a time not so distant I had the idea of starting a blog. It was the winter of 2009 and there were tough times all around. The economy was in free-fall and the agency I worked for was beginning to discuss layoffs. Though it may be hard to imagine I was crabby a lot of the time time. As I thought about a name for my blog I went with just about the first thought that came to mind, the sunny little buttercup. I added the thought that was most important to me at the time, counting my blessings, and this blog, Buttercup Counts Her Blessings, was born on January 12, 2009.

I started with two paragraphs and very little computer knowledge. Most of the first month or two my posts were short and had no pictures. But I leapt into the blogging sea and kept swimming on. I asked a lot of questions, figured out how to attach pictures and links and started to make blog friends.

I didn't realize that when I chose Buttercup as my blog name,  I was developing an entire on-line identity. I wasn't the most upbeat person, especially in the midst of the worldwide financial disaster. But something somewhat amazing happened. The longer I blogged as Buttercup, the more upbeat I became. I'm still not the sunniest person around, but I'm much more hopeful and optimistic than I would have been without my persona as Buttercup. It was an outcome I never imagined. Sometimes I think about how quickly I chose a blog name and wish I'd spent a little more time and thought in naming my blog. But at other times, like tonight, I once again think there are no accidents in this world and I'm grateful for becoming Buttercup.

How did you choose a name for your blog? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm not sure how it happened, but this week has flown by. Somehow it's the middle of July and I'm noticing the days are getting shorter. But not that much shorter yet and I'm still enjoying the longer days and after dinner walks.

As ever, thanks for visiting. Take care and stay well.

Thanks for sharing your beginning story. I don't have a blog but it is interesting to think of what I might name one if I did. Since I am a doll collector, I might select a name related to that.

I am glad that you are still blogging and sharing your stories with us. Here's to many more fun adventures in Buttercupland!

I have wanted to know how you came to chose this name, so I was very happy to read the answer! I do love buttercups, and we have a patch in the yard that Phil transplanted for me. I will post that story some day. The same think kind of happened to me after I started my blog, getting more upbeat! Well, who wants to always read a gloom and doom blog? I got my name because I get so inspired, and think of God's creation whenever I see so many things in nature.

I enjoyed learning how you came up with your blog name. I did not realize that you and I started blogging about the same time. My mother passed away in Autumn 2008, and I started blogging as I adjusted to life without her. I am so thankful for the sweet friendships thru blogging. My current blog is named for the wild mountain laurel that grows on our property.

Sweet! Like the song lyric, you indeed build me(us) up, Buttercup.
Why my blog name? Years ago while catalog shopping I spotted a lovely pendant with Respice engraved on one side, Prospice on the back -- "Learn from the past, look to the future."

Sweet Buttercup, I think you are a fun blogger. You show us around your big city. I love NYC, but can't just go when I want, like I have been there twice. LOL What you said about "becoming" Buttercup. I worked with a girl named Barb, she was smiling and happy everyday. One day I asked her <"are you always this happy?" She said, "NO I just try to smile and talk nice and then I become happy." I never forgot her and what she said. So now whenever I am out and about, I try to smile(before masks) say nice things. I call my clerks honey or sweetie, I get by with that because of my age. LOL Well I think it even helps them to feel like not everything is awful.
Oh when my daughter was helping me to make a blog, she said, what do you want to name your blog? At that time I was more into running around to thrift shops and goodwills...so I call that junking , Angie and I came up with SheJunks. I did not know at that time I would get a whole big family of friends that I have come to love. :)
Blessings, stay safe, xoxo, Susie

I think you made a great choice and much like you ia selected On the Bright side for the something to look forward to each day. We all need it. When we count our blessings things always do look brighter. We have to keep on looking on the sunny side of life so all the other stuff doesn't drag us down.

I've enjoyed reading about how you named your blog. My hubby passed on in the Fall of 2007. On January 19, 2008. I posted my first blog post so that I could learn how to do scrap booking and meet folks that I could learn from. A friend of mine from the South always called me Miss Edna, so that's where my blog name came from. Miss Edna's Place. My place to learn, share and talk about my day. Over the years I've made so many wonderful friends through blogging. Plus my blog has turned into more of a daily journal to be shared with my family and friends. I really enjoy it and I enjoy stopping by here to visit with you too. Enjoy your weekend, hugs, Edna B.

This was good to read. I’ve always felt encouraged reading your blog. I named my blog from my liking of berries and the few we have growing on the property - blueberries, blackberries, and a few raspberries.

I love your blog and I love the name! You are such a great example of being upbeat and positive - something we all really need now. My first blog, that I started about 2007, was called Keeping Up with The Joneses, because Jones is our last name. I discontinued that blog and started a new one in 2013 and my husband chose the name of that - A Day in the Life. It's not so creative, but it fits. Have a wonderful weekend! Stay safe and well!

I started Gains & Losses in May of 2010 hoping to find kindred spirits that would support me through yet another attempt at losing weight. I found many new friends and so much more. I had no way of knowing how many wonderful gains and the most devastating loss imaginable would become part of my blog story. I've blogged in fits and starts since Bill's death, but have never been tempted to discontinue Gains & Losses. I am so grateful for the friends I have made and met through the blog including you!

Hi Buttercup. I did type another note here but a cable went out on my computer before I finished it so it was lost. New cable and will try this again. I love this post and think it is a wonderful way to find out about others. It would be fun if everyone would let us know the whats and whys. My hubby, AKA known as the Captain, as we have been a team for about 60 years in all that we do, including projects and raising a family and he is the captain of the team. We had a small antique shop years ago called Country Cottage. When I started this blog we live in a beautiful little Victorian cottage and since we are located in the gold country of the Mother Lode, I decided to call it Gold Country Cottage. Sometimes I kind of wish I had called it something like Morning Glory Cottage because I am a romantic, but it is what it is and I love writing and taking pictures and decorating, so that it will remain for as long as I do..Love your blog..Stay well..xxoJudy

Thanks, Buttercup, for sharing the history behind your blog name. It was very interesting to read as I admittedly was curious. Now, I am thinking of doing a similar post. The reason for our blog title is that we started it when we lived in a small VA town and The Frog & Penguinn was what we named our home, which was a 1906 former farmhouse. The added "n" at the end of penguin was intentional since at one time we had considered a B&B, a very short-lived thought I will add. And, we had quite a collection of frog and penguin toys and statues as people would gift them to us or we would buy them to use an interior decor. We no longer have that collection as most of the stuffed toys and figurines were donated when we moved. That said, we do have a few figures and stuffed toys.
