Holey (No) Smokes: Today Is National Bagel Day

Of course for some of us, every day is National Bagel Day

I would be sorely remiss if I didn't commemorate the day of celebration for one of my favorite foods, the bagel. More carbs than I should eat at one sitting, but definitely one of my go-to treats. The bagel, largely unchanged from its origins in Seventeenth century Poland, has become an international food favorite. Though I'm not sure how the number was calculated I was fascinated to read that 354 million bagels were sold in 2018.  It wasn't until automation made the manufacture of the bagel less cumbersome that bagels began to be found in the frozen food section in just about every supermarket. I am fortunate that New York still has wonderful bagel shops and fresh and warm handmade bagels are still easily available.

My favorite bagel, you ask? It's a tie between sesame and cinnamon raisin bagels. I prefer butter on my bagels, but in a pinch, cream cheese works for me, too. On the question of toasting bagels, I'm with the not-toasting group. In my reading for this post I learned that bagel connoisseurs do not toast bagels and some of the traditional bagel shops don't have toasters. The bagel shop on the next block does toast bagels and that appears -- from my observations of the last few days -- a popular choice.
My beverage of choice to accompany my bagel, a cup of hot coffee, with a splash of half and half.

What's your bagel pick? Plain, sesame, poppy, cinnamon raisin or everything? Or perhaps another tasty variety? Butter or cream cheese? Plain or toasted? Beverage of choice? If you're not a bagel fan, no worry! National buttermilk biscuit day is May 14.

Amazingly, (No-Spending) January is half over. I did buy generic cough medicine -- definitely not in the spending column -- for my cough and a roll of paper towels. I ate lunch at home after grocery shopping and Weight Watchers and my only other expense was $2.49 for a bag of cheese puffs. Monday my expense was $2.06 for a Big Gulp after my quick visit to Trader Joe and yesterday, January 14, I'm pleased to report was a no-snack day.
My savings total as of January 15: $70.45.

As ever, thanks for visiting. Take care and enjoy a bagel!

I had no idea about this bagel info! Really interesting. And I thought bagels were always toasted. Otherwise they seem so chewy. I toast mine. I will make mini pizzas with them,or open faced sandwiched with melted cheese. Of course cream cheese. I love plain, and Asiago. With coffee for sure! I would love to try a fresh bagel from a New York shop, I hear they are really big, too!

let's celebrate. we used to toast our bagels for many years. even got a toaster with wider slots to put them in. but as we've aged, we've found we prefer not toasted better. so in honor of the BIG day... i intend to celebrate with an everything bagel, cream cheese and a heaty helping of lox. can't wait.

I didn't know about not toasting bagels, I've never had one that wasn't toasted. Now I'm going to have to try it without toasting. My favorite is blueberry with cream cheese. although I've never met a age I didn't like. I imagine your fresh bagels would be absolutely wonderful Mine come prepackaged from the store. Happy Bagel Day!

You are a smart woman so I hesitate to give advice - - - but stay on top of that cough. If it starts getting any worse, get to the doctor. I have asthma and whatever the virus is going around - - - the asthma compounded it and I got pneumonia. I am over it now - - just regaining strength and stamina. However I was at the doctor's office three times. If I had not gone, I would either still be in the hospital or they would have been having my funeral. It's sounds like I am being dramatic but that is how fast it turned. The doctor said they are seeing a lot of lengthy recoveries with this. Praying yours does not linger or get worse.

When we move in March, we will have a bagel shop(made fresh daily) within walking distance of the new place. I really like a plain bagel, untoasted, with a bit of cream cheese and strawberry puree on it-along with black coffee. xo Diana
ps...great savings so far this month!

I like all varieties of bagels, like them toasted with cream cheese!
Thanks for sharing this info. about the bagel.
Your savings for the month is so impressive, it has been a difficult time for us to pinch pennies this month with having to go out for drs. appointments and getting ready for the surgery.
Thank you for visiting and for your kind thoughts and prayers, so happy that your hip surgery went so well.
Blessings,
Sue

I love bagels! My favorite is cinnamon raisin with butter and cinnamon sugar! I do toast them most of the time, but have eaten them without toasting! I like a good plain bagel with cream cheese and everything seasoning as well as blueberry with blueberry cream cheese! Yep, I'm a sucker for a bagel! You've done an amazing job so far with your no spend January! Always enjoy reading your blog posts!

I also love bagels. Cinnamon raisin is my fave with butter and I sometimes add cream cheese. Of course to be different I add tomato in the summertime. Thanks for making me hungry:). Enjoy your evening dear friend. Hugs

I had no idea about the bagel history. I am in the plain, toasted camp with hot tea. With the onset of Type 2 diabetes, I have cut out bagels and all other breads. I miss bagels the most though. A toasted bagel with Earl Grey was my usual morning treat when Hubby and i visited our favorite coffee shop. Kudos on your conscious daily money managing.

I love a good bagel...toasted or not...butter or cream cheese...I've not met a bagel I didn't like! I didn't realize bagels originated in Poland. I try to stay away from them--too carby for this diabetic! I'd enjoy with tea or coffee with cream.

Read this post a bit late and saw that I had missed national bagel day. It has been awhile since I have enjoyed one, best with hot coffee I agree. Now, its on my list to enjoy one this coming week as we have a bagel store within walking distance of our apt. It’s in an alley and called, what else, Bagel Alley. My favotires include cinnamon raisin, whole green and tomato basil.
