Mile a Day in May

Purple Sneakers in Montevideo Uruguay, February 2017

One of my goals for 2017 is to walk 1,000 miles. I had a little setback when I broke my shoulder, but I'm back on track and getting in my mileage towards my goal. In April I walked 88 miles -- I need to walk 84 miles a month to make my goal -- and I'm right on schedule.

I admit I have to push myself to keep walking, but then I remember it's not simply a goal, but a way of keeping fit and healthy. I've got my college friend, Jane, keeping me company on my journey of 1,000 miles, but I thought it would be fun to see if anyone in Buttercupland would like to join us. We're starting a little gentler with a challenge of a mile a day in May.

The "rules" are simple. You need to walk 31 miles in May, preferably a mile a day and at least six miles each week. The goal is to make regular walks a healthy habit. Everyone is on their honor -- this is a trust worthy group -- and at the beginning of June I'll be posting a giveaway for everyone who completed an average of a mile a day. To keep myself accountable, I'll be posting about the Mile A Day every Monday and reporting my mileage for the week past. All miles count, whether you're corralling grandkids, doing errands, running or simply taking a walk after dinner.

I've got a busy week ahead -- errands and some fun things -- but I'm going to leave time in order to make sure I get my miles accomplished. My personal goal is 25 miles for the week ahead. It's going to take some planning, but it's a great cause, my better health.

Tomorrow we return to our New York A to Z fun with a visit to one of the most popular sites for visitors, Times Square. I hope you will stop by.

As ever, thanks for visiting and happy miles!

Sounds like a noteworthy challenge. GOOD luck to all the participants.

That is a great idea. It is exactly one mile from my home to the civic center complex where I used to work. Or it is on half mile walk around the block. It is easily done. Not sure I can do it every day but it is a worthy goal. Good luck to you.

I wear my Fitbit every day and have a goal of 10,000 steps a day. I seldom do that, but can usually do about 5000.which is about two miles. When I go for a long walk, I take my phone and find that the amount of steps vary greatly between the two. The phone step app is more accurate as the Fitbit has flaws and can count arm movement.

I am ready for the challenge, but will rely on the Fitbit since I always have it on. I will do extra steps to make sure I do a legitimate mile.

What a great challenge! Hope you do well. I probably put my mile a day in right here around the house, but haven't measured it. Walking id a great way to get your exercise and to see all those wonderful sights all around you !

Good for you! Way to be an example!

We walk each day, usually 2-3 miles, and I'm trying to work up to 5-6 miles a day. Trying to be healthier too :)

Sorry about your shoulder, glad to know that you're doing better now.

Keep up the good work, and I'll be thinking of you and knowing as I'm trekking along here in Utah, you'll be trekking along in N.Y. :)

Thanks to those of you who mentioned counting steps! I just got a smart phone. After reading this post and your comments, I downloaded the app!

This is a cool idea! I do not have step counter device. I do not think I'll join, per se, but I may be inclined to start some walks. At least that is something. Will try to report in with you on Mondays my progress.

That is a big challenge. I should do the same and maybe walk someplace fun. Like to Kentucky from Kansas. LOL! Imaginary of course

I love the purple sneakers...how cute are they!!! And I accept the challenge. I usually walk a mile in the evenings on the days I don't hike or walk at the park. So a mile a day is good for me! I walked a mile on May 1st...that's a start! This will be FUN! Hugs, Diane
