Night and Day

Actually the difference in the first two photos is only about an hour, but the difference in the amount of light is literally night and day. I woke up around 6:30 this morning and first thing I looked out the window to see the snow. There wasn't much, which surprised me. I decided I needed to go outside and see for myself close up and donned my blanket of a down coat, hat, boots and gloves, This was the scene.

I thought I was looking at a foot of snow, but learned it was closer to six inches. I was happy and surprised to see I wasn't looking at a blizzard. The snow had pretty much stopped by this time. Please note not a car is moving on this usually very busy street.

Since I was awake and there was no blizzard I made my way around the corner for my synagogue's morning prayer service at 7:30. There was no mass transit in New York City until 9:00 am this morning and there was concern that there would not be the needed ten people for the service. Members of the congregation members received an email asking for those who lived close by to attend. We had a great turnout and I realized how much I enjoyed the daily morning service. I had planned to attend more often when I retired, but I haven't gone very often. This was the perfect reminder that it's a great way to begin the day. It's a short service and after 8:00 I walked up to this scene on Broadway.

It's difficult to look at this picture and realize it's Broadway, which is usually filled with cars, buses and trucks. Most of the sidewalks had been shoveled and it was easy to get around. I enjoyed the quiet and snowy beauty of the streets. A lot of stores were closed -- workers couldn't get to them -- but my favorite bagel store was open and busy. There was coffee brewing and hot bagels and I enjoyed my visit there a lot.

Blogger is acting up again and it's being very difficult with photographs. I was able to enlarge the first picture, but not the two other pictures. I'm not sure what's going on. Is anyone else having issues with Blogger? Edit: Happy to enlarge my pictures. Thanks, Blogger, for your help!

Tomorrow I return to a regular January day. I've got a stop at the drugstore, Weight Watchers and the gym. I'm not eager for my Weight Watchers weigh-in. I've been mostly indoors for the last two days and have done more cooking and more eating.

It's time for reading and a cup of tea. Perfect for a snowy winter evening. As always thanks for visiting and keep cozy!

I am glad you are safe and warm! My friend Edna in New England is surrounded by lots of snow! They are home bound for a while. I think she said 26 to 30 inches and boy you can see it piled up in her yard! I just pray the power stays on. Keep us posted and enjoy your snowy city. Hugs, Anne

I'm glad you were able to attend synagogue. It must have been so strange to see NYC so deserted!

I've been hearing so much about the big blizzard, it was great to come to your blog this morning and see pictures and hear a first hand account. It sounds like it wasn't as bad as predicted, especially in NYC. Glad you could find fresh bagels at your favorite shop! I had to smile at the Weight Watcher reference, remembering how many times I felt just like this when it came time to weigh in. Good luck and stay warm!!

The City that Never Sleeps was asleep! Amazing photos. My only problem with Blogger has been bringing up the blogs I'm following. At times I have to keep "refreshing". No problem with the photos.

Best,
Bonnie

Beautiful pictures! I haven't had any issues with pictures but have had an issue with my sidebar updating properly! I guess blogger must be messing with us:) Have a blessed day and stay safe dear friend, HUGS!

How wonderful that NY did not get the blizzard but instead got the serenity of a quiet morning without traffic and busy city life. That must have been such a gift.

I'm so glad to hear that you missed out on the worst of the blizzard. Still you got a lot of snow. Many of the walks here are not shoved and it makes it very difficult to get out for a walk. I have managed a few short ones this month, but walking in snow is double work for sure. Snowy days indoors do make for more eating and cooking. Take good care on your ventures out today. We are sunny but very cold.

I am a day late getting to blogs, but I truly enjoyed your pictures on the streets. Hope today it is clearer and you can do more outside if needed. Happy Wednesday.

I fight with blogger all the time. I would post more if I didn't give up. Especially when posting more than one pic. I am glad you could go out and send us pictures.

Love your photos as usual! Before we left work on Monday we got a notice that the offices in the motherhouse would be closed on Tuesday because the weather reports were so threatening. Ironically we got very little snow. Because I live here at the motherhouse, I thought I would go to my office and get a few things done. Ironically I discovered that I'd locked my keys in the office so I couldn't get in anyway. Guess it was meant to be so I spent the day relaxing!

Looks like the predictions didn't come true for you. Still, the city looks deserted. Here at high altitude, 6" is considered a measly amount of snow! However, we have massive snowplows at the ready.

Carol, When I first retired I would meet my best friend at the coffee shop in town. The shop is gone and so is the owner and so is my best friend. I hope they are in heaven together. I love getting out in the early morning before the crowds, don't you? Blessings to you , xoxo,Susie
p.s. I meant to say, I enjoyed your photos.

I think snow is pretty when it first falls and lays.
However, not so pretty when it starts getting gray and dirty.
I am glad you didn't wake up to a blizzard.

Stay warm!!

You found ways to enjoy your "snow days" and happily NYC missed the predicted deep snow. Nice your favorite bagel shop was open.

Your first snowy scene is pretty. I'm not a winter person though so I'm always thankful when we don't have snow.
Good to hear you were able to get out and enjoy the prayer meeting and a nice stop at the Bagel place.
