Yes, Virginia, There is a BookClub.com

Without a doubt I love my book club. I've been a member for seventeen years this fall and I have no desire to leave it. But I have a yen to try another book club. I feel somewhat disloyal thinking this, let alone typing it for the world to see. But in my time of transition I'd like to widen my circle. As one book club organizer wrote, "I've been in book clubs for many years...At this point my dear book friends are fun to be with and share dinner, but we don't always read the same things..."

I wasn't sure where to even begin to find another book club and on a whim I did a google search for bookclub.com. I didn't get a site, but I did get a list of book groups on Meetup. For those of you who aren't familiar with Meetup it lists seemingly thousands of groups on any conceivable topic. I've heard of it and looked at a few of the groups, but have never attended one of the events. There were dozens of book clubs. They ranged from one that discussed "Fifty Shades of Grey" -- not for me to the one I found that discussed books that have won the Booker Prize, which is Britain's major literary award. I realize that I'm not really looking for a new book club, because I belong to a great book club, but I am looking for literary discussion, and that is possible to find.

Have you left a group where you have been a member of long-standing? Did you change book clubs or congregations, and if you did, was it a difficult transition?

We had another beautiful summer day today and I will post pictures tomorrow of our blue sky and perfect sunshine. Wishes for a wonderful Wednesday!

WE have a book club at our church for the ladies. The books are usually pretty tame. I used to love watching Oprah's book club on the telly. xxoo

I did enjoy being a book club member for a short while but it was in the evening and when it's cold and icy during the winter, I don't go out evenings, so I dropped out. It was always interesting to see the different take people had on the same book. I did read some books that I wouldn't usually read at all and enjoyed that too. It has been beautiful here and I've been enjoying all the nice weather. So far August is much nicer than that heat we had in July.

I'm with Theresa. I read too slowly and am afraid that it the book is too long I will never finish it on time.

I've always been a slow reader and when I was in grade school, no one "knew" about Dyslexia and there weren't methods of over coming it. I just thought I was stupid and didn't find out I was dyslexic until I wan 40.

Maybe now that I'm retired, I have more time to read and can think about a club.

Be well.

I do not belong to a book club but do enjoy listening to the authors themselves talk about their recent creations-and watch two shows per week where the hosts have a different type of writer-topics...and attend live venues where an author is selling his latest book-I think sharing ideas with others would be cool.

Buttercup, I need to join a book club...to get my butt into reading again. I used to read all the time...now I just skim through things, gleaning what I can. So sad. I wish you great luck with your new adventures. xoxo,Susie

I'm a funny lady....I very seldom have belonged to any club! I do enjoy reading, but I'm afraid I take my time. My sis is a speed reader and just amazes me!

Glad you are having nice weather. It's raining hard here today.

I have never been a member of a book club. I do seem to keep busy reading books from the UMW Reading list. UMW members all across the country are reading the same books, too. We just don't seem to gather to discuss them.:-)

I've never belonged to a book club which is strange because I love to read. Now that I have a kindle, I read even more. I think for me a book club would be problematic because I wouldn't necessarily be able to keep buying books and I don't live within walking distance of a library. Except for a few exceptions, the books I get on my kindle are either free or very inexpensive--usually not more than $2.

It would be fun to belong to a good book club but guess my husband and I just enjoy sharing recommendations with other people we meet in our church library. The only book club I was involved in turned out to be a "fan club" of the leader. Often very few finished the book!!!That drove me crazy.

Why not start a book club, here, on your blog, Carol? I would love to be a part of one, but just don't have the time right now to drive somewhere for a meeting. Just a thought....
