Today, I entered the world of artisanal ice cream, literally.
Last weekend I ate one of the best doughnuts of my life in Mystic, CT and this weekend, much closer to home, I dipped my toe -- actually my whole foot -- into the world of artisanal ice cream. After months of walking past this ice cream store, less than a mile from home, I stepped in. Often when I've walked past there's a line out of the door, but today with cooler weather there were only three people ordering ice cream. It was the perfect opportunity to explore.
The (not so classic) Classic Flavors
I first noticed the "classic" flavors, most of which are anything but the norm. There's vanilla and chocolate brownie, but there's also Arbequina Olive Oil and Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. Definitely not my grandmother's favorite strawberry ice cream. I was especially taken with the Coffee & Love Nuts -- fan of all things coffee -- and the Chocolate Babka with hazelnut fudge.
And the Limited Edition flavors
The Limited Edition flavors take ice cream flavors to an entire new universe. The Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread called my name, but I'm taken aback with the Pickled Cucumber Sorbet. Pickled, cucumber and sorbet just don't seem to go together. I didn't do any sampling -- I just had lunch and my more thoughtful self gave me restraint -- but on my next walk by, I need to stop and sample.
What are your thoughts? Do any of the classic flavors catch your eye? Intrigued by the Limited Edition flavors? Any interest in sampling the Tomato Gelato or the Cucumber Sorbet?
The weather continues to be perfect summer weather and I've been able to get in lots of steps. I'd forgotten how pleasant it was to walk in Manhattan when it's not 95 degrees. I'm savoring these summer days, enjoying the best of tomatoes and peaches, and walking while it's still light after dinner. The autumn will bring different treats, but tonight I'm grateful for the gifts of summer.
As ever, thanks for visiting and have a great summer weekend.

My favourite flavour of ice cream is butterscotch. Here in Montreal, Canada, we don't have Salt & Straw, though. We have Dairy Queen (DQ), Baskin Robbins, if I am not mistaken, and a few others. I rarely eat ice cream, though; however, I do like it. Thank you so much for sharing.
Which of these treats did you savor, Carol, and do you plan to return to sample any others? We have sampled a lot of home made ice cream during our travels, but never any with the flavors shown in this post. It would be a tough decision for sure😋Glad the temos have cooled down for more comfortable outdoor walks.
Good morning, ice cream was always my late father's favorite food as a kid we would go to Bonnie Doon after church Ice cream is so perfect during hot summers
Ice Cream and summer seem to go together. I don't eat it much in the winter. Any thing to do with pecans and caramel would be my favorite. Hope you get some soon! I would have had ice cream for lunch if I were there!
I think I would try the cucumber sorbet. It sounds refreshing!
Some of those flavors are just too exotic for me, Carol. Just give me plain ol' chocolate or vanilla, and I'm a happy camper. Enjoy the last days of summer!
Oh my gosh! I don't know what to think of those Limited Editions ... alternately fascinated and repelled. How fun to learn more about the team who envisions these combos, then makes it happen!
For the time being, I'm going to stick with the cookie dough.
