Looking downtown from Twenty-third Street
I was planning to do a blog post when I hit the 500 mile mark, halfway to 1000 miles and my destination, in my Journey of 1,000 Miles. But 500 miles was sometime last week and when I sat down tonight to see where I was, I was pleased to find out that I had walked 510.7 miles as of yesterday. On most days I've been walking about three miles, but the air quality emergency early in the month threw me off my stride -- literally. But I'm back to my walking and I'm happily on to the next 500 miles. I've also kept up with weight machines at the gym and I plan to return to Yoga tomorrow. The latter will be a challenge because it will be the first time in a year I've gone to Yoga class, but I'm optimistic I can make a good transition back.
Yesterday I took an excursion downtown and visited the Flatiron District, named for the -- Flatiron Building. The Flatiron Building was built in 1901 and was the tallest building north of Fourteenth Street. It's built on a triangular plot of land and the name "Flatiron" came from the shape of the plot, which resembled an iron. The building is now under renovation, but it's still a landmark in the area and the city.
The streets in the immediate area have become extensions of the adjacent Madison Square Park -- yes, where the original Madison Square Garden stood -- and are a great place to sit and enjoy the park view and a cup of coffee.
One of my favorite views, looking north from the Flatiron Building
I'm halfway home in mileage and we're almost halfway home for 2023. There's some really fun stuff coming up: Pep and I will be celebrating our birthdays next month and then there are weddings for two of my favorite people and their beaux. One of the weddings is in August and the other in September. But I'm not trying to wish the days away and I'm going to do a few posts with some of my favorite photographs from France and England while my memories are still fresh. La Rochelle, France will be our next port of call.
As ever, thanks for visiting and have a fabulous Friday.

Hi Carol. Congratulations on reaching the halfway point in your 1,000 mile journey. You are so faithful with it! I am afraid that my walking got derailed first by Covid, then by moving and renovating our house. I want to get back into walking, but right now, most of my walks are packing and carrying boxes to our car. I do feel like I am getting a workout each day, even it isn't showing in my step count. Will look forward to your future fun posts. See you again soon!
Congrats on getting to the halfway point already, Carol. I walk daily as well, either in downtown Nashua, NH, along the river walk or on a treadmill. I am not exactly sure how many miles I have walked to date, but sure it would be somewhat less than your tally. I appreciated reading about the Flatiron building as it certainly is one of NYC's most iconic structures.
