C Is for Cathedral Parkway

Welcome to Morningside Heights and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.

If we walk six blocks north on Broadway we'll arrive at Columbia University and a different subway stop. But if we walk two blocks east on Cathedral Parkway we arrive at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.

I took this photograph from Broadway looking east to the Cathedral. It doesn't look especially imposing here, but it stretches back several blocks and is the fifth largest church in the world. The groundbreaking for the Cathedral was held in 1892 and in the style of the great churches of Europe it is still under construction. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style and changes were incorporated later in the Gothic Revival style. It is on my "must-see" list for visitors of New York. Yes, it's out of the loop of Times Square/Central Park, but it is literally a fifteen minute subway ride from Times Square and Cathedral Parkway is the northern boundary of Central Park. If you're not able to get to Paris to see Notre Dame -- too far and too expensive -- you will not be disappointed in this beautiful cathedral.

If you're a fan of Seinfeld...

You'll enjoy a visit to Tom's Restaurant at Broadway and 112th Street. It is the basic local coffee shop with an enormous menu. The décor is just as it appeared on the show and Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George spent endless hours drinking coffee and discussing the details of their lives. If you're looking for a dining option after a visit to the Cathedral, you'll enjoy Tom's. You also will have many other choices in the Columbia Neighborhood.

Before we leave the Cathedral area, we're stopping for a cup of coffee at one of my favorite coffee places, Oren's Daily Roast. Great coffee, the fabulous scent of coffee and very friendly staff to help you make your choice. There was a branch of Oren's closer to where I lived that closed just after my coffee-themed 2016 A to Z Blogging Challenge. I am always pleased to find myself in this area and able to stop in for a cup of Oren's coffee.

I hope you've enjoyed our visit to the Cathedral neighborhood for the A to Z Blogging Challenge.  Due to cold rain today my post for D has taken a swift turn. We're not going to DeKalb Avenue in Brooklyn, but instead we're actually taking a ride on the subway. I hope you'll enjoy us for travel fun.

As ever, thanks for visiting and take good care!

The cathedral sounds like it could be at home in Europe and I would love to see it; I spent many happy hours at Notre Dame in Paris. You might be NYC's best tour guide, Tom's would be a fun stop also.

I so wanted to see the Cathedral on one of my visits, but it was closed when I planned to visit. I believe there had been a fire.

Oops, I'm sorry not to have arrived at the Cathedral stop in my Sunday best clothes. What a fabulous idea for an A to Z post. I am going to love our trips around New York. It will remind me of our visit when my daughter was at NYU. Now you will have to remind me of the subway stop close to there ...?
I'm too participating in the A-Z challenge on the new blog littlewanderingwren.com
See you soon
