Weekend Weather Update, Blizzard 2016

Yesterday it seemed that it was going to snow for the next month, but by this afternoon Jonas seemed to be just another really big snowstorm. I believe it is third on the all-time snowstorm record, but I've been in New York for two of the others and they aren't even memories. Not that there isn't a lot of snow, because there is, but happily in my neighborhood, many of the sidewalks are well shoveled and I could get out -- Pepe is good company but not the best conversationalist -- and enjoy the beautiful sunny weather today.

This is Riverside Park, on the west side of Manhattan. New Jersey is on the other side of the Hudson.

I wasn't the only person out today. They were many children with sleds and assorted sliding devices.

The other major activity was digging out cars. These two boys seemed to be having a good time while they worked.
Yes, they are on top of the car.

My biggest challenge walking around after a storm is the crosswalks. Some buildings do a nice job of clearing and some leave big piles of snow. I try to avoid the corners with piles of snow, but at the corner of Broadway and 89th Street some very kind soul used a snow blower and made crossing here very easy. Thank you, kind soul. The other challenge is bus stops. Today they were impossible to get to, but I'm hopeful in the next day or two they will begin to be cleared. I'll be on the subway for the next few days.

Manhattan is alive and well. Thank you all for the good wishes. So grateful for heat, light and snow blowers.

As ever, thanks for visiting. Keep warm, safe and cozy!

I cannot even imagine having to empty a city of that much snow. It looks like they are doing a fantastic job at it. I hear that Lancaster City is struggling...big time. It is good that you can get out and about so soon.

Glad it was a storm that didn't knock out your power or cause too much mischief in your area!

I'm so glad you kept your electricity! Can't believe what this storm has left behind! It's good you were able to get out today!

My son asked what they did with all that snow. I said they dumped it in the Hudson or in the river, right? I was just wondering. Have a beautiful day--be safe.

Enjoyed seeing the pictures. Thanks for getting out and letting us see. I am so glad that we have no snow on the ground here in Southeast Michigan. What a treat.

I've found that even though the roads are clear, very often it's hard travel for pedestrians. We didn't get the snow you had but have had much the same many times in the winters here. Best thing I own is a good pair of boots! Ha !

It looks like NY did a good job of digging out. I can't say that my little town did the same. I am hoping yo get out today, but not go too far.

I always love your photos of New York City--I feel like I'm getting a "native's" viewpoint. I've been there a few times but only see what the tour guides point out. However, one time I was there with another sister because we were going to get info about some of the NGOs at the UN from a sister who worked with Franciscans International. We stayed for two nights at a convent a few blocks from the UN and the sister we were meeting was to meet us near a subway station. We left early so we'd have time to stop and get a New York bagel--what we didn't know was that there was no place in the bagel shop to sit & eat. So there we were standing outside a bank across from the subway station with coffee & bagels. My friend is a lot less inhibited than I am and pointed out that there was a stone ledge near the bank entrance and we could just stand there and eat--which she proceeded to do. I sipped a bit of coffee, shoved the bagel (wrapped in a napkin) into my purse, and kept thinking how ridiculous we must have looked! However we have a nice lunch at the UN!

We had great fun walking in the blizzard -- we took two separate walks during the storm. Ridgewood, Queens, where my stepdaughter lives, was in pretty rough shape yesterday. The residential streets hadn't been plowed at all. The sidewalks had been cleared, so we could walk around, but at the crosswalks we were walking through drifts. Crazy!

It's fun to see the city in snow. Glad you were out and about in it. Snowing today here in CO.

Glad you are able to get out and around! I hear the city (Lancaster) here is struggling to get it all cleared out! Our township does a fabulous job of clearing our roads, though with the cold nights and sunny days, ice is a problem. It's supposed to rain tomorrow so that will either help or make things worse depending on what the temps are!
