If You're Trying to Break the Internet...

I'd like to see articles about...

Peace in this troubled, troubled world

A cure for cancer, for Multiple Sclerosis or macular degeneration

Kindness and courtesy

A love of education and reading.

I had an entirely different post planned for today, a much more fun, upbeat post, but every time I saw a photo of Kim Kardashian -- in her latest set of photos -- something in me twitched. The twitch got so intense that it became a post.

I may be beginning to sound like a cranky person, but I think this to-do about "breaking the internet" with these photos is just too much for me. Actually, I'm not an especially modest person. In the doctor's office, in the locker room at the Y I don't stay huddled in layers. I do wear a conventional bathing suit at the beach, but it's all in context. I'm kind of a live and let live person. We live in a big world and I don't agree with a lot of people and I know a lot of people don't agree with me. I believe in trying to get along whenever possible, for all of our sakes.

But, I can't help thinking of what Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "We become what we think about all day long." It deeply troubles me that this is what our country is thinking about all day long for days. The internet is not being broken by outrage over the murder of Christians in Syria, the tragedy of Ebola in Africa or the immense scientific success of landing a probe on a comet.

The ALS Bucket Challenge caught the attention of millions and brought awareness to this devastating disease. It didn't break the internet but it was the story for days. Let us say that it's time to come away from excess and shallowness and ask that the stories be ones of caring, compassion and awareness.

I don't care if you call me cranky, enough is enough.

As a postscript: If you haven't seen these recent photos, this post is not meant to encourage finding them. Consider yourself very fortunate. My apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently led to seeing them.

You are not cranky. You simply have your priorities in the right order. You care about making the world a better, healthier and happier place.

I totally agree. There are lot more things - more entertaining things even - to consider than their bs. Well put!!

A-men!
Seriously...."We Americans" have way too much time on our hands if this is the best we can do.
Glad you wrote this post.

You're not cranky...just truthful! I couldn't agree more. It sickens me that this is what people are interested in. I didn't know what this was about when I read your post. I had to go look it up....disgusting! I thank you for your honesty. Have a blessed Friday.

I don't know what "break the internet means". I only know that Kim Kardashian has something to do with O.J. Simpson. That's all I want to know about either.

Best,
Bonnie

I hear you. I thought it was far more fascinating mankind landed on a comet 311 million miles away.

What ever happened to kindness and courtesy, I have no idea. Compassion is so difficult to find these days, what a shame.

I didn't see the pictures but your blog is the second to mention that this morning. I don't care to either. I'm not going to search it out. There are too many other things that I need to think and care about. We have to set our own priorities these days.

I just don't get it!
Why in the world are we supposed to even care what someone in their shallow life is doing???

Why don't we care more about what small miracles happen every day.. the kindnesses that are shown and the good will that people are trying to foster?

I don't watch the news, or facebook, etc...
I purposefully try to avoid all negativity.

I seek the good, and plan on living that way the rest of my life :)

As much as those pictures of that do nothing woman annoy me, I think people are fascinated (?) by non-relevant matters because of all the troubling issues that confront us all day long.

However, I agree with everything you said.

There is definitely wrong with this woman.

Buttercup, I have absolutely no interest in the Kard-ass-ions. I keep hearing on the "news" shows about her oily big butt...or words to that effect...I don't know what it's about. I just don't care for cracked people. If she saves someone's life or donatse mega-bucks for homeless or something important...I hope the "news' lets us know ,until then big news put a sock in it. You are so right, there' s real news out there, more important news too. xoxo,Susie

I don't know who Kim Kardashian is, but I suspect that's probably to my benefit. We live in an ultra-selfish society. Let's hope in the upcoming Christmas season people will reflect upon goodness and love and how it can be shared - and less upon themselves.

I would agree with BJ that there is definitely something wrong with this woman, but I'd also like to add that there is something wrong with a world that glorifies something so ridiculously shallow and meaningless. Surely there are better things which deserve our attention! I blame the media for doing their best to convince us that such tripe is "newsworthy!" Well stated Carol! xxoo

I get tired of looking at these Kardashians! Ugh! No class, low life trashy and people flock to them as if they were some type of god. I think people get carried away on the internet about lots of things. I was reading an article about the CEO of Starbucks and NY writer who co wrote a book about our military. We seem to set them on the backburner. I am anxious to read that book. I like stories where people are being helped. Having just lost my job I am frightened of what is in my future. I know I am not alone. But I tire of the shallow, meaningless garbage that seems to work it's way into our lives everywhere. Great post sweet friend! Hugs!

I had heard nothing about this until I read your blog, TGFT. Then i started reading my Detroit Free Press this morning and there were not one, but two columnists talking about this. Yuck. Both were pretty disgusted with this activity, but shame on the public for eating it up. Kudos to you for saying something that makes sense.
