D is for Doughnuts

I've been giving a lot of thought to my choices for each letter. I was pretty much decided that "D" was for doughnuts. Nothing else came close. I love doughnuts and no other food -- there was a brief flirtation with the dill pickle -- came close. The award to the doughnut was confirmed with a ride on the 14th Street crosstown bus a few days ago. I spotted my all-time favorite doughnut shop, The Donut Pub, and the dill pickle was quickly put aside. There's nothing new or flashy here. I didn't see any hybrid doughnut/croissants, though they do make whole wheat doughnuts, which is a newer variation. There's a very retro vibe that I like, and the great thing about The Donut Pub, besides the terrific doughnuts, is that it's not retro. It's The Donut Pub.

 Love the neon!

I have nothing against chain restaurants and food stores and I'm thinking of featuring one of my favorites later in the series. But I have a special fondness for the one or two or three-of-a-kind. There's just one Donut Pub and you've got to come to West 14th Street to find it. It's worth the trip.

I did a little research on the history of the doughnut -- yes, maybe I am getting a little carried away -- and the "earliest recorded use of the term" occurs in Washington Irving's "History of New York" in 1809. I also learned that both doughnut and donut are permissible spellings. On a personal note the glazed cruller is at the top of my doughnut favorites and in the autumn, the cider doughnut.

One of my realizations as I continue the Blogging from A to Z Challenge is that I could definitely gain some weight during this process. So far, I've just been taking a lot of pictures. But today, as I was photographing what I think will be "F" and "J" I was especially tempted. I was able to resist my temptation at "F," but only because the line was really long. I'm making a return trip on Monday -- my optician is 100 feet from "F" --and I may give in to temptation.

I'm enjoying the A to Z Challenge and welcome the visitors who are also participating in it. I love visitors and whether you've been here once or a hundred times, you a cherished citizen of Buttercupland. Thanks for visiting and come back soon!

Dear Carol. The donut has certainly made a comeback. Not that is was ever gone, but the cupcake seemed to be the highlight for a long while, now I think the donut has taken center stage once again.
I do love a good donut, though the waistline seems to find a spot for each and every bite.lol
Hoping all is well and have a beautiful weekend. Blessings dear. Catherine xo

One of my biggest weaknesses is my love of doughnuts. I probably eat way too many of them, but they sure are good with my morning cup of coffee.

You may or may not have noticed that I am not blogging (or commenting much) right now. Life just got in the way. But I'm as so loving your A to Z challenge and keeping a list of the places you talk about. Bill is still talking about a trip to NYC later this year and wants to visit all the places you'll feature. This is GREAT incentive for him right now as he is trying to relearn to eat after completing radiation. Still very little solid food, but at least he's eating some soups and soft fruit. Not much, but a start! He is LOVING your posts and so am I. Maybe you can be our guide to all these places.

I would have to skip the donut, Buttercup. Not only would they give me unneeded calories, they also give me indigestion.:-( I have eaten many in the past! xo

I will definitely look up the Donut Pub when I finally get to New York. Just reading your post has me in the mood for doughnuts. Maybe I can talk the Husband into stopping there after the produce stand. :-)

Buttercup...if someone said Cookie or Doughnut? I'd say cookie...although I have eaten doughnuts, I do not go out of my way for one. But when I see then all decorated at the stores they look good. I do like the tiny chocolate covered ones. Hope you had a nice doughnut and good cup of coffee. xoxo,Susie

Donut!!! I am suddenly grateful it is not easy for me to get to an independent donut shop at this very moment . . . golly! You have reminded me of so many stories . . I read your "E" post - which mentioned donuts . . and - here i am.

I could share some donut stories with you that would make you laugh! I try to steer clear of them but when we were in NYC, I know this doesn't sound exciting , but our hotel was in Queens. We would walk to the Dunkin Donut and get a coffee and a Boston Creme Donut. Such fun. There is a donut shop here that makes Apple Fritters the size of a large dessert plate! A woman who use to work with us would bring them in and I could never resist although I would cut it into three pieces and eat it for three days! I am loving your tour.

I love donuts and would love to learn how to make them. My favorite overall is a Krispy Kreme glazed donut. However, there are no Krispy Kremes around his part of Texas. There is a chain called Shipleys and their bear claws give KK's glazed a run for its money.

I enjoyed reading about The Donut Pub. Have a great week!

I love doughnuts too. Good doughnuts - not the Dunkin kind. I never knew of The Donut Pub. I"ll have to try it. For me, it's a toss up between doughnuts and a black and white cookie fresh from a bakery.
