My Coffee Predicament

For the last twenty years I've had a fairly standard coffee maker. Put the water in one opening, put the coffee in a filter in another opening and press the green button. It's been fine, but not great. For the last year, it's been less than fine. I've cleaned it -- vinegar and then a few cycles with just hot water -- but it's still not fine. I only make coffee on weekends, but it's not very good coffee, even though I buy very good coffee.

I love coffee and as the reality that I will be home weekday mornings gets closer and closer, I want to be able to make very good coffee at home. I have a coffee predicament and I am asking the brightest group I know -- my blog buddies -- for suggestions. I am hesitant about a Keurig. We have one at work and I do like it, but I want the ability to brew a pot of coffee if I have guests. How do you make coffee and do you recommend your coffee-making method? Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Despite the snow it's been a very normal weekend. I expected to spend the weekend at home, but I've been out both Saturday and today and got almost all of my errands done. I didn't get as much done at home as I expected to, and barely did any blog visiting or the decluttering I hoped to do.

Let me sign off now. It's time for "Downton Abbey" and the New York Times crossword, a very pleasant way to end the weekend.

Wishes for a cozy week!

I have my Cuisinart, it makes from 2 - 12 cups, love it. I also have my personal size Keurig, and I like that too. I use both daily, the Cuisinart in the a.m. and the Keurig usually in the p.m. for decaf, tea, or hot coffee. Tried the hot cider but hated it. xo

Don't have a Kuerig, I drink more than 1 cup of coffee in the AM, so don't feel it is practical. I have a Cuisinart and have found it to be good. With the Cuisinart it does depend on the coffee you buy...I can taste the difference between coffees. It makes between 2-12 cups, so perfect for me and for guests. Glad the snow didn't stop you from moving about. Enjoy your week!!

I don't know much about coffee makers, but ironically I wouldn't want to live without coffee :)

We have a Mr. Coffee version of the Keurig coffee maker and for daily use, just the two of us, we do like it a lot. Coffee is quite expensive that way.

Fisherhubby is much more of a coffee lover than am I - - - he prefers to grind his own beans and his favorite way to "brew" a pot is to use a French press, we have two of those. However, they have been "idle" since we got the Keurig.

Oh, I see others have mentioned a Bunn. We used to have one, and while it brewed a great pot of coffee you have to be careful because it can boil all the water out of the reservoir, so from time to time you need to just run plain water through it to refill the reservoir. It also can be rather noisy when the water in the reservoir is getting low.

We've debated getting a Keurig ... but, for the same reason you mention, have held off in favor keeping our tried-n-true 12-cup Hamilton Beach with the thermal pot. 8 years now and still going strong.
(While I love the idea of differing k-cup flavors, as much coffee as we drink that could get $$$!)

Well, it just so happens I live in WA State, home of Starbucks and here we are all about brewing the perfect cup of coffee! I have a 'Capresso' Grind and Brew and I love it. You pour the beans in one side and flip the filter holder under it and it grinds and brews automatically. Or we can buy already ground coffee and do it that way, too. We've had it for almost 5 years and it still works like a charm. It has a nice carafe that keeps the coffee warm and looks nice on your table, too. And of course we buy Starbucks 'Breakfast Blend' which they sell in the supermarkets. Love a good cuppa! xx

I think it's all about the beans and the grind. I grind mine fresh for every cup - and I use a Black and Decker coffee maker. Beans are from Starbuck's and every cup of coffee is delicious. I hate to have coffee at friends' houses where they open a can of coffee. I also have a French press but really only use it rarely.

A few years ago now my kids got me a Cuisinart coffee maker which is like the Kurig and makes a cup at a time. I love it. I had a Mr. Coffee maker before and like it too. I keep both on the kitchen counter thinking like you that if I had company, I'd like to have a whole pot made. To this date I haven't used the Mr. Coffee at all. When I have company, we make a cup at a time if anyone wants one. Even when I've had some of my family here for a week, the one cup at a time has worked. It doesn't take long at all to make one. I watched Downton Abby last night too and was surprised to hear that the next episode is the finale already. I sure hope they come back for season 4. Hope your Monday is a great one!

I make my coffee at night and we drink every drop! We have a Hamilton Beach coffee maker! I love really hot coffee and it seems to suit me at this point! My daughter has the Keurig and they love it but they only drink a cup each. We need a whole pot:) Enjoy your day my friend, HUGS!

We are tea drinkers here, though I have a Farberware coffee maker that I use when family comes. They have a liking for French Roast. I buy fair trade coffee that our church sells.

I am definitely not an expert on coffee makers (though I love my coffee). My husband and I use a Black & Decker 12 cup coffee maker and it has held up very well! The coffee tastes great and stays nice and hot :)

Hugs to you,
Stephanie

I'm gonna be watching Downton Abbey tonight. I was watching Walking Dead last night. Could there be a bigger difference between two shows? I have relied on my Mr. Coffee(s) for decades but I'm not a coffee purist.

Buttercup,
I have a Mr.Coffee ten cup maker. It has a stainless steel pot. It brews the coffee that stays warm in the pot...not sitting and cooking on a hot plate type. I love good coffee..I say that I am a coffee connoisseur..really I may not know the best cup of coffee..but I sure as heck know a bad cup...yuck. Your old maker may be not warming the water as well. Good luck with your choice. xoxo,Susie

I am one of the few who cannot give you advice since we don't drink coffee in our house. I don't have any convictions against it but have never liked the flavor of it at all. Good luck in your quest!

We have Melitta filters and cones for individual cups of coffee. I use a french press if I want more than one cup. If we have guests, we pull our Mr. Coffee coffee maker out of the cupboard.

I set up a coffee stand in the dining room. I have an electric kettle to heat up water. It really saves space in the kitchen!

While growing up, coffee was the smell I woke up to and the smell I fell asleep with. Coffee flowed in my father's Norwegian veins. I LOVE coffee! I got a Keurig for my birthday last September .. I am loving it! I can have a cup of coffee in a flash whenever I choose. When we have large groups .. everyone can choose the flavour of coffee or tea that they prefer. My daughters, who have worked as baristas while making their way through university, love it as well. I think it is the convenience and variety of flavours that we love.
