48 Hours Later

Forty-eight hours ago I was sitting in a room at the Howard Johnson in Long Island City, surrounded by colleagues and it was almost the moment -- 8:12 P.M. -- for high tide. The water and wind were rising, and all the houses in Breezy Point were intact.  In the interim the subways stopped running and water filled some of the tunnels, three friends have lost their homes and over 80 houses burned in Breezy. We are still unsure about the condition of my friends' house. He was hoping to go out there this afternoon and I've asked him to guest blog with photos. I'm not sure if he will, but I know he has been touched by the concern of the citizens of Buttercupland.

I finally came home from work this afternoon to a lovely fall day. There was very little damage to be seen in my neighborhood, and simply by the look of things you would have no idea that one of the biggest storms in history had passed through less than two full days before.

The subway station is still closed, but this line will be running tomorrow to 42nd St. There is no power below that with which to run subways.

The neighborhood Time Warner office lost a window, but that was the only broken window I saw in a half mile walk.

My thoughts through the last few days were that I wanted a vacation, a massage and a drink and not in that order. The vacation will have to wait and I hope to get a massage over the weekend. The drink was easy to do, but instead I chose a visit to the new frozen yogurt store a few blocks from my apartment. I had some very tasty pumpkin yogurt and Heath Bar topping and felt very well treated. It's not a trip to New Orleans, but I'm happy to make do with the treat in hand.

I know we New Yorkers are resilient, but I'm beginning to feel stretched a little too thin. I'm not a worn out rubber band about to snap, but I'd love a few less stretches. Again, all my thanks for the kind words, email, virtual hugs and wonderful feelings of support. My friends, colleagues and I cannot begin to thank you!

So glad you are ok. How scary it must be to have been in the City. The new reports look so bad but a lot of stories of courage and bravery.

Praising God you are okay. You deserved that frozen yogurt! I have been looking at the pictures of the damage. It is mind-boggling to think about all the cleanup and rebuilding ahead. This was a rough time to have this happen, too - - - with winter just around the corner. We are blessed to live in an age when we can see news anywhere and hear updates on our friends and family.

Prayers from across the country for you and your neighbors and all in neighboring states. I'd been away from blogger but not away from tv and have been watching as much as I can about all in your area. Our hearts go out to you and friends there. Lots of work to do to recover, but it will happen. Your trip to New Orleans can be done later too! Our daughter lives in Louisianna and evacuates often for hurricanes. Hang in there. Hopefully it won't be long until all is well again.

Home ... is there a sweeter word?

I'm so blown away that you've taken time to share with us throughout this ordeal.
I've been sharing your FB updates and posts with my coworkers as well. And like Billy Joel, we're all in a New York state of mind!

Hugs from Arizona,

Thank the dear Lord that you are ok and were able to make it home. I can't even begin to imagine whet you are going through there. I will continue to pray for the recovery and repairs being done there.

Buttercup, We find our blessings where we can at times...getting some yogurt. My heart hurts for NY and all the cities with so much damage. Hang tough dear Buttercup..people do care. Sad about your friends losses too. Some damage, people can deal with, but when it's total distruction of entire neighborhoods, it's unbearable. xoxo, Susie

One thing I've learnt over the years and even more so after visiting the U.S. is how resilient and steadfast you all are. What ever is thrown at you you always come back stronger. I admire you and a piece of my heart will always be over the pond.

Spent another day thinking of you and your friends. I am happy to read this post about your neighborhood. Isn't that amazing the one broken window within several blocks.
thank goodness you still have your home. I am up enough at night thinking of all of you so it eases my mind that your neighborhood faired better.
Don't blame you about the vacation, drink and massage I have not even been in a hurricane and I need all three myself.
You take care and know I am thinking of you
Love
Maggie
