It Might As Well Be 1959...

Hot dogs and beans for supper!

When I was growing meals were very routine. We ate dinner as a family and very often we had the same food for the same meal each week. Not always exactly the same, but generally Thursday was fish, Friday always  chicken and quite often Saturday night was hot dogs and beans.

I've diverged from this model, but this afternoon I got the biggest craving for hot dogs and beans. Often in the winter I make baked beans in the crockpot, but I hadn't started them in time. Instead I got a can of baked beans -- the same kind my mother used -- and a package of turkey dogs and had a perfect Saturday night supper. I had an apple for dessert and for a treat for later tonight I have a single serving cup of my new favorite flavor of ice cream, Drumstick. This is a takeoff on the Nestle cones and I've just discovered it in the single cups.

Do you have a favorite Saturday night supper? Inquiring minds want to know!

I had a quiet day. Slept unusually late and relaxed reading the NY Times.  Cleaned the bathroom and the kitchen, grocery shopped, got to the drugstore and had a good round of discarding paper. I also had a chance to visit lots of my blog buddies and loved catching up. Hope your day was as easy and relaxed!

I didn't like beans when I was a kid. I love them now. And, guess what? I suddenly have a huge craving for beans and hot dogs! I am putting it on this weeks menu :)

Happy to hear about your quiet and relaxed day!

That was an all too familiar supper on our dining table on Saturday night when I was growing up too. I carried on the tradition with my own family as well. Baked Beans and Saturday nights just go together like peas and carrots!! xxoo

I love hot dogs and beans. It's a been a favorite here for years. Saturday was always some kind of sandwich like sloppy joes or pizza at my house. Glad you had a great Saturday.

Just found your blog!

Too funny as my family often ate "weiners and beans" but with cut up hot dogs and baked beans. Then we always had corn bread muffins on the side. My friends though we were nuts!

Saturday night is usually something simple for us - homemade pizza or paninis.

I don't have a regular daily menu of meals but your picture of beans and wieners sure brought back memories. As a child, every meal consisted of meat and potatoes--boiled potatoes one meal and fried potatoes the next. Often Mom would serve Van Camps pork and beans plus some inexpensive type of meat. It might be a jar of pickled pork hocks or pickled herring, a can of sardines or fried liver. I learned to enjoy it all. In fact, I still get a craving for those foods once in a while.

I LOVE hotdogs and beans, just reading about it makes me want to go open a can of pork and beans and eat them! Unfortunately, I don't have any hotdogs, or I would eat it with them, that's how much I enjoy it.

I definitely remember beans and hot dogs for dinner. We also had them at school. I don't remember any Saturday night specials, but our usual Sunday meal was a roast.

Hi honey
It sounds like you have had a good weekend.
Wow your post brought back memories of my child hood. My mom did that too. We had meat loaf night, fried chicken night and so on.
Your supper here has made me hungry. lol
I use to love to make mexican food on Saturday nights because I had more time on the weekend for it but now that I am single I never know what I am having until I head for the kitchen. Lots of time it is cereal. I know bad bad me
Hope you have a wonderful week and your Giants pull it off tonight.
I am sorry to say I am not watching it.
Have a great week
Love
Maggie

This post brought back memories! We had the same meals each week like you. Saturday night was hotdogs, baked beans, chips, and soda! The only time we were allowed to drink soda so it was always my favorite. LOL I still love hotdogs and husband says I am a cheap date because that is what I want when we do get a chance to eat lunch out.

We tend to eat in cycles like that--my mom cooked that way, too. We like to have hot dogs and hamburgers on saturday night and watch our Emergency! dvd collection.

Oh I remember that- hot dogs and Heinz's vegetarian beans- mostly on Sunday night. And sometimes we had something called specials which were super-sized hot dogs (just in case the regular ones didn't have enough salt and fat.) Oh I do so miss unhealthy living!
