The Floor is Yours

This evening I was reading a blog I like a lot, Get Rich Slowly: Personal Finance that Makes Cents, and the topic for today was blogging. A quote that really resonated with me was "Your blog does not belong to you. Your blog belongs to your readers. Without them you have no blog."

I know what I like to write about...Life in New York as a rapidly aging Middle-Ager and all that comes with it...life, health, surgery, holidays, street fairs and ice cream in a big nutshell. I assume that folks who visit here are interested in a good part or all of these things, too, or you wouldn't visit here. But am I correct in my assumptions? Is there anything that you would like my New York centric perspective on that I am not blogging about or my Middle-Aged centric perspective? Are there topics I am totally missing that you -- my readers seems so pretentious -- would like to read about? The floor is now open and it belongs to you.

I'm sorry--I disagree with this quote. It you didn't share parts of you life with us on this blog then there wouldn't be a blog.
Be true to yourself.

I enjoy your blog just as you have presented it. I love being able to "see" parts of the country I have not visited and hearing about your daily life and weekend adventures.

I like your blog the way it is...and you blog about what you want to blog about. If it is interesting to you it will be interesting to those who read it. So just keep on sharing what you have been sharing.

I enjoy your blog just the way it is. I visit blogs because they are personable and because the writers share their hearts with us and their loves and joys and all the other bits that make their lives unique and wonderful. I think that if you start catering to what you think your readers want, you lose the essence of what makes a really good blog, really good! xxoo

First let me say that I love your blog just the way it is. It is you and that's the way it should be.

Second, I read "Get Rich Slowly" also and will have to say I totally disagree with that statement. Your blog IS you, it reflects your thoughts and if others choose to read it and become part of it, that is the icing on the cake. But if you write, you most DEFINITELY have a blog whether anyone else reads it or not.

I think the difference lies in WHY you are writing. If you are writing for profit, then yes, you need lots of readers. If you are writing for the joy of writing, you will continue to write what is on your heart, no matter what!

Buttercup, the number of people who read your blog (and the quality of THEIR blogs - yes, I read them!!), is a strong indicator that we all love you and your blog just the way it is.

I like your blog just the way it is too! Though there are many blogs that advertise and seek to build their viewership, I personally do not blog for anyone other than myself and maybe my kids. What amazes me is that others would even be interested in most of my posts. It is so daily routine and often mundane.

I love stopping by to stroll along with you through your daily adventures, dear Buttercup!

I truly believe our blogs should reflect our personality and lives. Honesty is by far the best policy.

I'm going to disagree with that statement too. I think our blogs belong to us. Each blogger has something different to offer that no one else does and because of that I know my world has become much larger.I love seeing new places and never have been to New York, California, England, or Missouri. I read blogs from all these places and have learned so much. As long as you enjoy what you do, I think that is what matters most. Hope your Tuesday is a terrific one!

I like it as it is, too, or would not continue to read it. That does make sense we do it for our readers but I originally intended my readers to be family members. The rest of you are a delightful bonus!
