Rawson School, We Pledge to Thee...

...Brotherhood and loyalty.

The candles were lit in memory of our departed classmates.

On Saturday night I spent some wonderful hours in Farmington, CT at a reunion for our elementary school, the Sarah J. Rawson School. There were about 100 people who grew up in the Blue Hills neighborhood of Hartford. Though there were only a few people from my class (1964) there were neighbors, friends from Hebrew School and Girl Scouts. It was a wonderful evening all around, and an extraordinary feeling to be in a place where everyone wanted to be present and understood and shared the memories of my childhood. Three  of our teachers joined us, two in person and one on videotape. It was an evening of hugs, laughter, a few tears and lots of penny candy, reminiscent of our beloved Sless' drugstore, where we all stopped for penny candy on a regular basis.

In addition to reunion I got to spend time with my fifth grade best friend, Lonni, and see her new house. She was a terrific sport to host me just after moving last week. We kicked off our reunion weekend with a visit to one of my favorite ice cream shops, A.C. Peterson. The decor has changed, but the ice cream is still delicious and yes, we both had sundaes, and they were wonderful.

On the medical front...I met with the surgeon on Friday and the meeting went as well as it could possibly have gone. Based on our discussion, I am feeling very optimistic and especially happy that the surgery can be delayed until after K's son's wedding next Saturday. I'm scheduled for August 29 and it will be an outpatient procedure. I was impressed by how much time my doctor took to explain the procedure and answer questions. I feel very fortunate for the care I am receiving. As ever, thanks for all of your prayers and concern.

There's still time to enter the Brawny apron giveaway. Please stop by Thursday's post. It's one cute apron!

Hugs, sweet dreams and wishes for a happy and healthy week!

Sounds like a great reunion. A terrific opportunity to touch base with childhood friends and memories of the past. That sundae sounded scrumptious too.

I've actually never heard of an elementary school reunion, but I have to say that after reading your posts and your guests' comments about childhood stuff, I'm having lots of memories come back to me. It sounds like you had a great time at the reunion. That's wonderful!

I use to live in Vernon, CT several years ago. It was a wonderful experience, but really hard for a "southern girl" LOL Looks like you had a great reunion.

What a special weekend you've had...how nice that you could attend your reunion. I can't remember but 2 or3 people from my elementary days. How lovely that you not only remember them but got to spend time with them as well. I bet you and Lonni enjoyed every minute of your get together... wow... you've been kicking up your heels on both coasts the past 2 weekends. What fun.

Yes, I agree with you.... we should plan a trip to England to visit Sybil and Marie.

You are in my prayers.... keep your chin up and enjoy the coming up wedding. Hugs, Lura

I am thankful you got to have the wonderful weekend before the surgery. After the surgery, relax and enjoy yourself. You may or may not feel like some 'little projects' like a new book to read. Build your nest before the procedure so you can recover easily. One thing I did after my knee surgery was to keep a journal of what I was able to do each day. It seemed like it was taking longer than I wanted to get back to normal. However, when my activities were on paper, I could see that there really was improvement each day.
