Hot Time Summer in the City...

...Literary Monday!

I love catching up with some of adventures of the summer. It was the hottest summer in a decade and I have the electric bill to confirm it! But despite the heat there were some very fun times this summer. I didn't get to blog a few of them, but definitely want to share them in the next few weeks. Amazingly, summer is nearing an end, and like every summer it flew by.

One of the joys of living in New York is the access to authors. As a reader it's an especial treat to hear, and sometimes meet, favorite authors. This summer marked the 75th anniversary of Penguin Books and to celebrate the occasion one of my favorite authors read at our local Barnes and Noble.

Happy birthday to Penguin!

Janice Lee reads from "The Piano Teacher"

Mary is all-smiles as she gets her copy of "The Piano Teacher" signed

I attended with two of my favorite book-loving friends, Mary and Terry, and it was a great evening. "The Piano Teacher" is a wonderful novel, compelling and thoughtful. It takes place in Hong Kong, during and after World War II, and for those of us who enjoy historical fiction, it is a terrific read. Thanks, Penguin and Barnes and Noble and thanks too, Mary and Terry for wonderful company.

What were the literary highlights of your summer, favorite books, new authors discovered? Please share, it's Literary Monday. Hugs and happy reading!

I read Peace Like a River by Leif Enger and that is my favorite novel read this year. He tells a powerful story perfectly and makes you care about the characters.

Oh Buttercup! You just reeled me in! Truly! I've always thought about visiting NEW YORK, I'm sure I'd love the theatre....one of my BFF is a gorgeous 20 something living in Harlem now and loving it......But Literature? Come on! Books are my drug of choice! Authors? Not because of fame but because of the GIFT of words! Oh, My Stars! How fantastic!

I'm going to have to check out The Piano Teacher! And,although not familiar with the book or author,,,I think I could write Volumes myself on the two Piano teachers I had!

Oh my dear blogfriend,,,,let DO stay in touch so we can talk/breathe books! And who knows? I may end up there sooner than you'd think! LOL

I think Dani would put me "up" on a rollout/futon for a Visit! Her mom is one of my "Bestest!"

Looking forward to checking out the book! Stay cool,,it is in the MID 90's here near Seattle,,,,,and we don't "DO" AC! Ackkk~ I'm Schmitzen like a Schmootzel!" As my son would say...LOL

Hugs and love,,,,have a great week!

This was a very fast summer, mostly because I spent it indoors in the air condition. Favorite reads for this summer? Too many to list but the new Janet Evanovich book comes to mind,

I've read so many that I'd have to think about it. Reading is something that is a part of my life as much as eating.

I just wanted to pop on and say "hi". I know I haven't commented lately but I have been reading. You always make me so interested in NYC, and to think I used to live so much closer and only went there once when I was in Jr. High. Thanks for sharing your daily view of the city ... it's always so uplifting and insightful.

Summer's not over YET! It has gone by fast for me too, though. The best summers are those that make you *almost* long for winter. (That way, I don't get sick of winter until January instead of by November!)

This summer was great reading-wise because I got to finally read two fantastic Agatha Christie's - 'Murder on the Orient Express' & 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd'.

The woman is a genius and I wish I could meet HER!!

I was on vacation when I finished 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' and found out the other books I brought, I'd alread read so I was at a loose end. Until Mom came through (she always does) with about a dozen books she'd brought for my sister and I picked one of those.

It's dangerous to say you love a book before you've actually completed it but I LOVE this book!

'Night of the Living Deed' by E.J. Copperman. It is a Haunted Guesthouse Mystery and it's wonderfully funny and I can't wait to finish it up and see if I was right as to who-done-it!

I'm glad you've had/are having a great summer and a great literary summer, too!

I totally agree -- meeting a favorite author is such a treat! I recently saw Jeffrey Deaver at a delightful boutique-size shop specializing in crime fiction. Now, I'm prone to the jitters 'afore hand -- hoping authors won't be "uppity" ( and burst my bubble) .... but he was so nice; and (who'd guess?) FUNNY!
