Goddaughter of my Heart

I am beginning this note with a disclaimer, Mother's Day is not my favorite holiday. My mother died twenty years ago and I still miss her every day. The other, perhaps more overwhelming issue is that I am not a mother and there are times it makes me sad. All that aside, for the greatest part I have made peace with these issues. This blog is about counting blessings, my blessings, and there is one terrific blessing I specifically associate with Mother's Day, my goddaughter, Jess.

Jessica is not actually my goddaughter. Her Aunt Maureen is her given godmother, but Jess is the goddaughter of my heart. Jessica went to college an hour from New York and I visited frequently. We tried to find the right description of our relationship and friend and friend's daughter just didn't describe it, and so I became a godmother. What a joy! No one could have a sweeter and lovelier goddaughter or daughter. Jess is beautiful, accomplished, intelligent and funny, but more important she is one of the kindest and most caring people I will ever meet.

The last paragraph is part of my post from last year at this time. The words still ring true, and I am delighted and blessed to dedicate this post to Jess and to her mother K, with lots of love.

Wishes to all who are mothers, hope to be mothers, all of us who are daughters for a days of blessing and happiness.

It takes all kinds of mothers to raise a child. Being a God mother is one of them for sure. So Happy Mothers Day to you. Enjoy the day and the blessings that come with it!

Dear Buttercup,
You are loved every day, not just Mother's Day. But for all you've done to help raise me, I honor you on this day as well. Much love.

It sounds like to me you and Jess are made for each other, especially after reading her comment to you above me here. You both are blessed and here's wishing you a wonderful day!

I dedicate the preface to my write for today, to you, sweet friend! And TY for that beautiful card, it means a lot to me.

My Mother passed in 1989 ... I miss her terribly too ... such a void.

Hugs of love, sweet friend ~ Marydon

How very poignant. I am glad you have this special person in your life that helps to fill the void. You are special and surely very important to this young lady, as well.

You do not have to have a child to be a 'mother' and I know in my heart you are a mother!

So a Happy Mother's Day to you too. ♥sandie

Happy "Godmother's" Day! Hallmark made cards for that -- they sold out in a wink. Also, all the "You are like a mother to me" cards sold w/in 2 days, too. So there's lots of love out there for those who did not have kids but are mothers of the heart.

Hi Buttercup,
I can not say I fully understand your post as I have not walked in your shoes, but I can only imagine how hard today must be, but I tell friends who have no children, that have pets or godchildren you know what it is like to love something more then you love yourself.AND for that you celebrate the day!!!!It is the LOVE of a Mother whether you have children or a Mom still alive it does not matter if you love your friends, nieces, nephews or whom ever as you would love a child, you have the heart of a Mother, and you my friend have a Mothering love to those around you!!!!
SO for that, celebrate the day!!!
hugs,
jamie

Oh, Buttercup! And here I came and wished you a Happy Mother's Day. I just assumed . . . one should never assume, should they. But I assumed because you have such a very soothing and nurturing nature. I felt that right away about you. You struck me as someone whom you could stay up late with and confide things to and feel comforted by . . . so I still believe you to have a mothering spirit and perhaps you have mothered a few in your time. It sounds -- from the lovely and loving way you write about your goddaughter that I sm right.

I apologize for my insensitivities.
