I've been giving a lot of thought to my choices for each letter. I was pretty much decided that "D" was for doughnuts. Nothing else came close. I love doughnuts and no other food -- there was a brief flirtation with the dill pickle -- came close. The award to the doughnut was confirmed with a ride on the 14th Street crosstown bus a few days ago. I spotted my all-time favorite doughnut shop, The Donut Pub, and the dill pickle was quickly put aside. There's nothing new or flashy here. I didn't see any hybrid doughnut/croissants, though they do make whole wheat doughnuts, which is a newer variation. There's a very retro vibe that I like, and the great thing about The Donut Pub, besides the terrific doughnuts, is that it's not retro. It's The Donut Pub.

I have nothing against chain restaurants and food stores and I'm thinking of featuring one of my favorites later in the series. But I have a special fondness for the one or two or three-of-a-kind. There's just one Donut Pub and you've got to come to West 14th Street to find it. It's worth the trip.
I did a little research on the history of the doughnut -- yes, maybe I am getting a little carried away -- and the "earliest recorded use of the term" occurs in Washington Irving's "History of New York" in 1809. I also learned that both doughnut and donut are permissible spellings. On a personal note the glazed cruller is at the top of my doughnut favorites and in the autumn, the cider doughnut.
One of my realizations as I continue the Blogging from A to Z Challenge is that I could definitely gain some weight during this process. So far, I've just been taking a lot of pictures. But today, as I was photographing what I think will be "F" and "J" I was especially tempted. I was able to resist my temptation at "F," but only because the line was really long. I'm making a return trip on Monday -- my optician is 100 feet from "F" --and I may give in to temptation.
