I had an entirely different post planned for today, a much more fun, upbeat post, but every time I saw a photo of Kim Kardashian -- in her latest set of photos -- something in me twitched. The twitch got so intense that it became a post.
I may be beginning to sound like a cranky person, but I think this to-do about "breaking the internet" with these photos is just too much for me. Actually, I'm not an especially modest person. In the doctor's office, in the locker room at the Y I don't stay huddled in layers. I do wear a conventional bathing suit at the beach, but it's all in context. I'm kind of a live and let live person. We live in a big world and I don't agree with a lot of people and I know a lot of people don't agree with me. I believe in trying to get along whenever possible, for all of our sakes.
But, I can't help thinking of what Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "We become what we think about all day long." It deeply troubles me that this is what our country is thinking about all day long for days. The internet is not being broken by outrage over the murder of Christians in Syria, the tragedy of Ebola in Africa or the immense scientific success of landing a probe on a comet.
The ALS Bucket Challenge caught the attention of millions and brought awareness to this devastating disease. It didn't break the internet but it was the story for days. Let us say that it's time to come away from excess and shallowness and ask that the stories be ones of caring, compassion and awareness.
I don't care if you call me cranky, enough is enough.
