Trader Joe's in my neighborhood this morning
Storm snacks weren't a thing when I was growing up in Connecticut and we had a lot of winter storms. It started to snow around Thanksgiving and I'm not sure that we saw grass in the yard until around Easter. There were basically three seasons: shoveling snow, mowing grass and raking leaves.
We may not have had snacks but we did have food. My mother always had milk and bread in the freezer, along with meat and cans of orange juice concentrate. We also had a pantry that was well stocked, so there was rarely a last minute rush to the grocery. The only specific storm snack that I remember was a batch of chocolate chip cookies that my mother made as we waited out Hurricane Donna in 1960.
But for the storm that's approaching -- not sure if it has a name yet -- storm snacks are part of the storm experience. I've seen at least a dozen posts on social media about what friends are buying for storm snacks. I did my grocery shopping on Wednesday and didn't think to stock up on snacks knowing that the snacks bought on Wednesday would probably not be there for the snow fall on Sunday. I did get a bag of popcorn kernels and some baking supplies. I definitely plan to bake on Sunday and look forward to the warm kitchen, a cup of coffee and the aroma of home baked cookies or sweet bread. Home made banana bread might be my storm snack.
Is anyone else buying snacks specifically for the next few days? Are you planning to cook or bake as part of your storm activities?
I have a storm snack memory from Super Storm Sandy in 2012, though I didn't use the term storm snack at the time. I was part of a group of colleagues that sheltered at a hotel in our work neighborhood. As it was extremely difficult/impossible to commute to work we stayed at the hotel and went to the nearby office during the day. I spent the afternoon before reporting to work buying snacks to have in the evenings. The hurricane was approaching and I was glad to buy whatever was available. I wasn't sure how many nights we would be staying at the hotel and wanted to have snacks to last for at least several days. On our first night I put out cookies and chips and in less than an hour one of my colleagues had eaten all of the cookies. Not a cookie was left. A valuable lesson was learned that evening, don't put out all the storm snacks at once.
Stay safe and stay warm, friends. A big thanks to all who work so the rest of us can be home and have electricity and storm snacks.
As ever, thanks for visiting and take good care.

I made our favorite oatmeal raisin cookies yesterday so we could have a healthy storm snack, Carol. Here in the South, we could lose our electricity, so everything has to be done in advance. Stay warm!
LOL- I never heard the term Storm Snack until recently. We lived through a lot of big storms while I was growing up in PA. The big thing was to prepare for a power outage so to have lots of water saved on hand. We had a wood stove for back up heat if needed and cows that had to be milked by hand if we lost power- a LOT of work. Maybe those are the 'good old days' that people talk about. lol. xo Diana
Reading your title, my mind immediately went to your 'adventure' in Super Storm Sandy -- only I couldn't remember the name. Hard to believe it's been that many years ago; some things definitely leave a dent in my old memory.
They're saying our area won't be affected by the approaching wintry weather. Still, my thoughts are occupied with what to serve on Super Bowl Sunday!
We usually keep the pantry well stocked. I don't think a trip is needed to get storm snacks. I like that idea of banana bread to snack on! Sounds very good to me.!
There are no storms coming our way, It's a beautiful sunny weekend !
I have never heard of storm snacks. Not a bad idea! I was kind of wishing I'd bought some stuff for chex mix (though I love that storm or otherwise!)
Count me in on the never having heard of storm snacks but I know my niece would run out and buy enough coke to get her through. I like to bake when I'm snowed in.
No storms in my area.
My husband bought storm snacks, but I did not as I felt that we had plenty and I can always whip something up. I prefer something warm when it is this cold.
The US storms have featured here in the UK on our news channels.
Stay warm and stay safe.
All the best Jan
I never heard of storm snacks before. We don't do anything. We are so used to snow here that it isn't that big a deal.
Usually, what I have heard people shop for in advance of a storm is bread, milk and eggs vs. storm snacks. That said, we usually have nuts and granola bars available in our apt. For this current snow storm, I made chicken soup and bread which we enjoyed while watching the snow continue.
Yes, I bought storm snacks and other food items to enjoy during our icy weekend. The grocery stores were full around here and the shelves were empty! It is joke among my family members to not eat all of the storm snacks before the storm hits:) We had a big pot of chili last night and it was yummy! When I worked, 24 years ago, we always had coworkers that always ate ALL of the snacks in the snack room! Memories! Enjoy your day dear friend, stay warm! HUGS!
This is the first time I've ever heard that term, storm snacks. For us, it was always baking. Home cooked goodness, and the ingredients were always part of the pantry. Or it might be soup too-- again, no need to go out and buy anything special.
