Manhattanhenge, 2018
And tomorrow is Manhattanhenge, 2023
Manhattanhenge, as distinguished from the historic site in Southern England, is an event when the setting or rising sun is lined up with the east-west streets of the main grid of Manhattan. It happens twice in the summer -- around May 28 and July 13 and twice in the winter -- around December 5 and January 8. The summer events coincide with the sunset and the winter events coincide with the sunrise. I've never seen the winter Manhattanhenge, but I was in the right place at the right time for Manhattanhenge, summer 2018.
In my own words, I can't provide a detailed explanation of why this occurs, but the short description has to do with the Commissioner's Plan of 1811 which set up the street grid for most of Manhattan, which was rapidly growing at the time. The street grid not only provided for Manhattanhenge, but made getting around most of Manhattan much easier. In some cases, the streets of Lower Manhattan followed the cow paths of New Amsterdam and it's very easy to get lost.
I'd hoped to be part of the viewing audience tomorrow night and it may occur, but a change of plans and an overlooked medical appointment, make it less likely. If I'm at one of the cross streets, you know there will be photographs.
Thanks, all for the birthday comments and good wishes. Seventy-three thus far doesn't feel a bit different than seventy-two and not very different than seventy-one or seventy. I'm definitely a little creakier, but that's nothing new.
As ever, thanks for visiting and happy Manhattanhenge.

I have heard about and seen photos of this phenomena, Carol, and can imagine it would be great to see it firsthand. Perhaps you will be able to catch a glimpse, although I am sure streets will be crowded with others trying to do the same. Hope you enjoyed your birthday and that you celebrate all year.
