No Dragons, but Lots of Ice and Mist: A Visit to Prince Christian Sound

A panoramic view of Prince Christian Sound

Game of Thrones wasn't filmed in Prince Christian Sound, which is off the coast of Greenland, but it certainly could have been. I saw no dragons, but it wouldn't have been surprising if a dragon or two emerged as the ship sailed through the narrow sound.

I was totally unprepared for the beauty and otherworldliness that I discovered during the six hours (or so) we sailed in the sound. I'd done some reading about the sights I'd see in Iceland and Halifax, but not here. I had no expectations about scenery that would be before me and everything was a complete surprise, mist, glaciers and mountains.

My first view after the fog lifted

I'm not a morning person, but after reading the ship's daily schedule I decided to become one for the day and made my way to the top deck of the ship at 5:40 a.m. I settled in to one of the seats in the very front of the observation area and saw a world of fog. But a short while later I turned my head and this landscape was what I saw.  I quickly made my way out to the deck to take pictures that had no glare from the glass.

The land of ice and mist

I was almost alone on the deck in the midst of this amazing view. I snapped a picture of a member of the crew to show his family the extraordinary setting and he returned the favor to me. I can almost see the dragons peeping out from the mountains.

This cruise was the first time a Celebrity Cruise Lines ship had stopped in Greenland and sailed through the Prince Christian Sound. The crew was as excited as the passengers and for a special treat the heliport was open to crew and passengers for picture taking. By then the mist had cleared and while it was still beautiful it was much less unworldly.

There are glaciers and waterfalls in the mountains
and a small iceberg on the right side of the water.

I've enjoyed reliving this memorable day and hope you've enjoyed our visit, too. Going from the sublime of the scenery here to the less sublime, tomorrow is Monkey Monday. I've got some photographs of Pep LeMonkee enjoying his trip of a lifetime to share.

As ever, thanks for visiting and good wishes for the week ahead.

Greenland was once on my list to visit but we are not into large cruise ships so doubt I'll ever get there.

Yes, to early morning wake-ups when the scenery is so magnificent, fog, mist and all. Thanks for sharing it and the pics of yourself onboard, Carol.

You have shared so many beautiful areas of the world with us on this adventure! Thank you for doing that. Isn't a blessing to be able to travel the seas on modern vessels with communication for help if it was needed? Like you, I read a lot and some of your pics - - like the one from early morning - - had my mind jumping back in time to the early explorers with their wooden boats as they navigated waters for the first time and not always sure of where they were going or if they would arrive safely. I am so thankful we live in this day and age.
