My buddy, Stinky, joins me for Monkey Monday
Today we're combining Monkey Monday (slightly after Monday) and an armchair trip to the Peruvian Amazon. Six years ago I was visiting Peru and was about to visit Monkey Island/La Isla de los Monos in the Peruvian Amazon. It was a demanding, but also an amazing trip -- Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and the Amazon -- and one I am so grateful for being able to take.
Monkey Island is a rescue sanctuary for monkeys in the area, thirty miles from the city of Iquitos, which is largest city in the area. Iquitos is accessible only by plane and boat. The group I was traveling with stayed in a lodge accessible only by boat and we traveled by boat during our stay.
A moment at Monkey Island, 2016
I was excited to visit Monkey Island, but quickly realized that these were real monkeys and Stinky was somewhat/a lot smelly. I heeded our guides recommendation that we -- if possible -- put our glasses away and take off our earrings. Stinky and I had a great visit and earned a permanent place in my heart.
Birds of the Amazon
My visit wasn't all monkeys and knowing that there are bird fans in Buttercupland, I'm including a photograph of some of the birds that were part of my visit. The trip was a fabulous opportunity to see species that otherwise would be available in photographs or with a trip to the zoo.
We've got book fun coming up this week. I've got several posts about books and bookstores and look forward to sharing what I've been reading with Buttercupland.
As ever, thanks for visiting and have a great week.

That sounds like quite an amazing trip!
Love it. Love your blog. Can't wait to hear about the books. My grand moved to Brooklyn New Years...works publisher NYC.
sounds like an amazing trip. My daughter wants a monkey as a pet.
You have taken some amazing trips. I am so thankful you share your experiences with us in words and pictures! It's more fun than a book because of your personality in the narrative.
What a fun post, Carol! Say hi to Pepe for me, smiles.
A fun trip, for sure!
Years ago, my husband's grandmother was on a trip and a monkey snagged her eyeglasses and headed for the trees, never to be seen again.
