In the Dark of December

In the dark ages when I was growing up one of my hobbies was memorizing poetry. I had a good memory and both my parents and my school encouraged this activity. I spent hours reading poems and memorizing ones I liked. A lot of the poems have faded from memory, but some remain. One of my favorites is "I Heard a Bird Sing," by Oliver Herford. I probably recite it to myself every day in December, and today was no exception.

  I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December

Though winter began last week, today felt truly like winter, especially once it grew dark after five. I was once again grateful for the gift of poetry and this sweet bird singing in the dark of December.

As always, thanks for visiting. Take care and keep cozy!

It is good and necessary to have hope on the darkest of days. This is an excellent poem to recite during the long winter ahead.

What a sweet poem and a good one to commit to memory! My husband always reminds me on the 22nd of December that the days are getting longer. Have a wonderful new year. Now I'm going to memorize this little poem. Thank you!

Our sunset is at 3:35pm. I miss the long days of summer when it never really goes dark. Thank you for the lovely poem, it is a delight to read on a dark winter afternoon.

A beautiful poem, with a manageable rhythm and format. I love how the French learn very early on to memorize and recite poetry; it keeps the mind meandering to strengthen the use of language. LOVELY! And thank you so much for coming to visit me, Carol! Much happiness to you in 2015! Anita

What a sweet poem. I told my mom the other day that each day that passes now means we are one day closer to spring.
