City Hall

I had the great good fortune of working in this fabulous building during my years with Mayor Ed Koch. Though my official responsibility was taking care of the Mayor's schedule, soon after I began working there I also began giving tours. There was no official tour program at the time and we had a number of requests from visiting groups. It was informal and I was self-trained, but after I got over my initial nervousness I came to enjoy it very much. Construction began in 1803 and it has been used continuously since its completion in 1812. This link tells about the history and architecture of this beautiful building.

This fountain is in City Hall Park, directly in front of City Hall. I like seeing the rest of Lower Manhattan in the background. Of course, when City Hall was built it was close to the edge of New York City. One of my tour "legends" was that the front of the building was marble and the back was granite, because the builders believed that no one would see the back. The settled part of the city at that time was facing the front of City Hall.

My featured blogger for today is Dee, who writes DeeCoded. Dee, who is part of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge, lives in Singapore and has a very fun blog.

I hope you've enjoyed our visit to City Hall and I hope you have a Cheerful Wednesday! Tonight is "my" evening with Debbie Reynolds.

NY is so interesting and so very different from the Northern Colorado prairie where I reside and count my blessings.

I am enjoying my tour of your city so far! I really loved your picture of the fountain. And what an amusing story about the back part being granite because they thought no one would see it!

Thank you so much for featuring my blog today! I am so flattered. Will return the favor one of these days. :)
