Can the Ultimate City Girl Learn to Make Jam?

I had a shock tonight at the grocery. I'm a peanut butter and jelly fan -- not often -- but once a month or so I get a craving. My latest craving came a few nights ago and I searched the refrigerator and there was no jelly. I stopped at the grocery on the way home from work and was astounded in the jelly aisle. The least expensive jar of jelly/jam was $3.39. There were no sales and this is Manhattan, land of the ridiculous prices.  Somewhere in my mind I thought that jelly cost $2.59, with more for the gourmet brands. On the way home from the grocery, with my tiny jar of peach jam I got an idea. Couldn't I make jam?

I know somewhere in the array of talented cooks of Buttercupland I can find assistance. Please remember I have a kitchen the size of a closet and can't stand for very long. Does anyone have any ultra easy suggestions for me?

The week was hectic and tiring, and I came home from work each evening --did get some time last night for errands -- ate dinner, read some email and fell asleep. I am promising to rest up over the weekend, but I will get to services tomorrow and to the hairdresser on Sunday, and I will spend time in Buttercupland. There's an overdue movie review I'd like to post. What are your weekend plans? Hope there's time for rest, fun and quiet moments.

Wishes for a sweet, sweet Weekend!

It seems each time I grocery shop, prices have skyrocketed. I have never made my own jelly/jam but I sure remember grandma's homemade preserves.
Hope you have a very nice weekend. Take care.

My Grandmother used to make the BEST strawberry jam. Oh if I could have it one more time!!! Google and see if they have a microwavable canning set...that may prevent you from having to stand in teh closet for long!

I've never made jam so there is no help coming from me ...it's turned much cooler here today so I think it may be time to check out the fall clothing and maybe do a little shopping.

Buttercup, I get sticker shock every time I go to the grocery. If you haven't bought something for a while, once you go to get more, the prices have raised. Plus I just hate grocery shopping any time. When I was young, the grocery was the only place I got to go. I would make sure I looked my best. it was an adventure for me. Gee, how deprived was I? Hope you got some rest. xo, Susie

I have never liked peanut butter and jelly together. I love peanut butter and I occasionally like jam on toast, so a jar of jam lasts me a long time. When it comes to making jam, I think any recipe you find will be for a lot more than you need. By the time you buy all the ingredients and jars, you'll probably decide that it's just not worth it!

I was flabbergasted when Tom came home one day with a jar of homemade jam -- made by a most unlikely (male) customer ... who, by all counts, might well afford to buy an entire preserves factory (lol). Said, "He loved the experience."
So, I guess my point is,"Just GO for it!" and have a GOOD time doing something new!!!

I don't do canning but hope you enjoy it if you try. Prices are supposed to go higher this fall due to the drought this summer. It's too bad you can't go to a discount store somewhere.
Best advice is to watch sales and clip coupons.
