And the Windfall Goes to....

Right after I finished last night's post I went to check if I had any phone messages on my home land line phone. And the land line screen had fuzzy lines, instead of clear writing. My phone/phone machine was gone.

Yes, I still use a land line, despite having a personal cell phone and a work cell phone with two-way radio capacity, and a land line at the office. One woman, four phones, does seem excessive when I see it written out, but it doesn't feel excessive. Until last night's discovery it seemed inconceivable to give up my land line and I was set to spend part of my windfall on a replacement phone/answering machine. But I didn't stop tonight and buy a new phone and the more I think about it, the more I think I may not need a land line. Is this the time to move to cell phone only? Have any of you made this jump and if you have, has it worked out well?

I've had the issue of changes in technology on my mind for the last week and have been thinking of starting a series discussing various items in our lives. The telephone was at the top of my list to blog about and I've been compiling others that I'll be writing about in the weeks to come. The series is called, "Do You Still..." Inquiring minds want to know, do you still have a land line?

Appreciate all the good ideas I received for spending my windfall. I especially like the idea of underwriting a pitcher or two of sangria at the Spanish restaurant in Howard Beach. I've got red wine on my mind.

Sweet dreams and wishes for a great Thursday!

Like you, we still have a landline, in addition to a cell phone. I like the landline, it does not go everywhere with me, like the cell phone. Which I see as a good thing.
Sign me up for some sangria LOL.

The only incoming calls on our landline seem to be telemarketers ... despite being on the DNC list.

I'm all for pitching it in the pool, but DH is reluctant. I think he's worried if we needed to call "911", would they be able to pull an address off the cell.

No landline here. We bought a Magic Jack for the house phone. And alternate between the cellphones. We have a limited number of minutes on the cellphones divided up between 3 of us, that's why we got the Magic Jack. Plus we also Skype. So we haven't missed the landline a bit. A beach, a pitcher a good book. Sounds like a plan, even if the windfall only affords you an afternoon. ENJOY. Take care.

We had gone cell phone only, but once the baby was on the way we went with Magic Jack and have had that for over a year now. Generally anyone who calls uses my cell phone, but for anyone whom I don't want ot have that easy access to me...they get the house line :)

I have only a land line. I blogged a while back about the fact that I didn't have a cell phone and really don't want one. Of course, if you already have several other phones, it makes sense to let the land line go. The huge advantage to a land line is that you always know where the phone is!

We haven't had a landline for a few years now. It was not by design - it sort of just happened. Everyone calls us on our cell phones and eventully no one was calling us on the landline. We even forgot we had it and we finally got rid of it. As for the 911 ... well, it's more likely I'll need it when I'm out and about. But the chances of me passing out or unable to tell the 911 operator where I live are SO remote; besides my smart phone has GPS and I hope they would be able to find me that way. Landline just doesn't seem to be worth the cost. We don't even use it for internet as we have cable and wifi.

my older kids would never consider having or calling a land line! pretty different generation for sure. We still have a landline for something like $24/mo so all the teleamarketers and colleges asking for more donations are able to reach us!

Hard to turn loose of the archaic when it was right up there with our first television in my childhood memories.

Great topic....I've had no land line since 2004 and the cell works very well. I do have to be very conscientious about plugging it in to charge, though! I also use Skype.
At the same time, I cut cable back to the very basic and pay only 12./mo and that has made a huge savings and I really do not miss it....except for HGTV and the Food Network.
