Help! I'm Designing a New Business Card

Once again, I'm asking advice from my wise and wonderful blog friends. I'm designing a business card to bring with me to BlogHer'11. I've never designed a card before and it's both exciting -- I can put anything on it -- and scary. Will it be silly looking? My visit to BlogHer in August is to both meet other bloggers and to begin to think about my next job. I hope (hope!) to retire from my present job next summer and I am interested in exploring marketing and writing options. I've done marketing for twenty-five years and have edited a newsletter and brochures for the last seventeen years, so none of this is new. But it's been within a very formal structure. The agency I work for has over 50,000 employees and it is not a loose and easy-going environment. Our business cards all look alike and there's no room for cute or whimsical. I'm eager for cute and whimsical in my life!

I'm thinking of just listing my name, the blog's name and my email address. I saw some cute cards with little yellow flowers -- buttercups -- and I liked the look a lot. Has anyone else done "blogger cards?" If you did, what did you have on the card?

I know I can count on my blog buddies! Thanks and have a great week.

Oh, how fun for you! Wonderful opportunity for you to meet others and to have cute and whimsical both! I have no experience with cards, but the little buttercup flowers will be very cute. You might enjoy looking at Laura Ingalls Gunn's blog @
http://decortoadore.blogspot.com. I think she has bs. cards.
Have a restful night.

I'm going to go with small 'buttercups' too.

I could give you several pieces of advice about business cards however it is more opinion then actual first hand knowledge. There are so many different opinions about BC's. One person will say "make it over the top" and another person will say to keep it simple and professional. I would make the BC reflect you and your style and determine what you want your message to be and what impression you want to leave. My business cards reflect my love of sewing and cottage style. If you use the Buttercup it may strike up further conversation and the Buttercup does reflect you. Just don't do your BC's on the flimsy cardstock. Pay extra and get a quality heavier cardstock. It is professional and shows that you are serious about your business. And my personal preference are the cards that have a gloss. I can't remember exactly what it is called in the BC world though. Good luck with this. Keep us posted. Would love to the finished card.

I think you should definitely use buttercups, or at least use card stock in buttercup yellow :-). I would put your name, email, blogspot, and telephone.

Thanks for stopping by tonight, and I agree, the three of us should have lunch sometime. xo,

I TOTALLY agree with Sue's thoughtful comment ... and while I've no talent for graphic design, I strongly believe first impressions are key!
I'm "head-over-teacups" about yellow, so yes, I'm in the pro-Buttercup theme ... but perhaps with a dash of intelligence and kindness at the same time? Personally, I love your "mission statement" at the top of your blog. Perfect, in it's simplicity.
Annnnywho, I can't wait to see/hear what you decide!

Since you are "Ms.Buttercup" .... I think the buttercups will be perfect on your new cards. I am excited for you to be starting a new business adventure.

I have been reading though several of your posts catching up. My favorite summer treat is home made ice cream. Thanks for the tourist pictures from NYC. I do love NY. I wish I could be a tourist there again.
Have a great week. Hugs, Lura

Hello:
What fun BlogHer'11 sounds. We are sure that you will have a wonderful time and think that your idea for a business card fitting for the occasion is a very good one.

We cannot add any specific expertise but think that the advice you have received from others is all very practical. Certainly we should always say that the weight of the card on which the design is printed makes an impression on us. Heavy is good in our book.

Reading through your posts, Buttercup really reflects your sunny outlook and would be a perfect basis for the card's design. It would also make a refreshing change from your 'corporate' persona.

We are delighted to have found you via the comment which you left on our blog and look forward to many happy returns!

What a great opportunity for you to connect at Blogher with lots of other wonderful people. I wish you much success in finding the perfect retirement job to do. After I retired I didn't want to work at all but wanted to enjoy my home and family like I'd been unable to do when I worked. Of course that is not all fun in the sun at times, but still I do love retirement. Go with the buttercups!

I didn't have any ideas about your cards, but I wanted to see what others said because you always have the most wonderful comments! Reading these, I agree: go with something "buttercup" or yellow. Even though I know your real name, I think of you as Buttercup and I think it reflects your personality. I hope you have a fabulous time at the conference!

I like the buttercup design, too - - - because it reflects you and sounds like you like it, too. I don't know if I would include your phone number - - - just the email and blog - - - and first name if you want. Don't give more information than you have on your blog profile.
