Welcome, Fleet Week!

This is Fleet Week which honors the Navy and Marine Corps. Begun in 1984, there are visits by a number of U.S. ships and there is a visible presence of sailors and marines in New York City. Welcome to New York City and thank you for all you and your colleagues around the world do on our behalf.

Sailors in Times Square

The summer has arrived and it's hot. I promise not to complain about the heat, as I did so much complaining about the snow and cold. I am limiting myself to complaints about winter and promised I wouldn't complain when it got hot. One of my goals for this weekend is a few new summer shirts. Up until today it didn't seem necessary, but I realize my wardrobe won't get me through the summer. It's very warm on the subway platforms.

I hope you are all having a good weekend. I spent the afternoon at the theater with a friend we had a nice walk and visit, too. Tomorrow I'm planning to spend time with my cousins and on Monday I hope to get to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn with friends for the Civil War Memorial. There is a great post about this on one of my favorite blogs, Mille Fiori Favoriti. Good wishes and sweet dreams!

Hi Buttercup!

I am planning to visit the cemetery where my dad is buried tomorrow. It is a veterans cemetery and every Memorial Day weekend, the Boy Scouts put a flag at every bronze grave marker. It is lovely!

As a former Navy wife (now civilian) I very much appreciate this post!

One of Barney's complaints being a pre 9-11 member of the military was that not many appreciated the efforts--but it's refreshing to see that really people haven't--they just took for granted that they were there!

Buttercup, Pat @ Mille Fiori Favoriti emailed to say that she still cannot post comments on your blog and that she can't email you as the email says "no reply". I still can't believe I can post and my followers came back! xo,

A few - - or quite a few years ago, there was a documentary made during fleet week? My mom had recorded something about big ships or big boats and I was thinking it might have been made in NYC harbor or on the Hudson. - - - Probably NYC though. She loved it whatever it was.
My dad was in the Navy. I loved their uniforms.

Anchors AWAY, my boys! Love the photo, Carol. God bless those that have fought & those that continue to fight for our freedoms.

As a Navy wife, I loved viewing the return of our troops in the cities we lived in ... such pride for them & what they do.

Sorry, I missed talking with you again. Hope your weekend was wonderful.

Have a fabulous week ~

Hugs,

Thank you once again for sharing your NY life with us. Life in my little corner of the world seems dull in comparison to all you have to do and attend in NYC. Don't get me wrong.... I enjoy having a large home with an acre land. I enjoy our orchard, patios and pool... but somehow life in NYC just seems so exciting and glamorous. I love visiting NY through your blog since I rarely get to go there in person.

What did you decide about Costco? We belong to both Sam's club and Costco. Both are pretty close to us. I don't know why we are members of both places since they are so similar????? I like shopping there but I usually get a whole lot of stuff. I don't know if it would be worth it if I had to take a cab or 2 buses home. What did you decide?

I hope that you have had a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I am so thankful for those who serve and who have served our great country.
Hugs, Lura

I hope you were able to get to the memorial. We went to one here. Love the photo of the sailors in Times Square too :-) It reminds me of the book I read last summer, called Summer at Tiffany. The author was there for the famous celebration at the end of WWII.
Blessings,
Marcia
