New Business -- 2011 The Year of the Museum

The Brooklyn Museum

I've been thinking of the year ahead and my hopes for the year. Some of my thoughts are "old business," and include goals I posted about last year. Some were successful and some less successful -- but that's another post.

I spent time last week looking over my calendar, remembering the year past. I noted many happy memories, but I was struck by the absence of many museum visits. I love going to museums, and when I travel I generally schedule the activities of the visit around the museums. I like art museums, science museums, historical homes and monuments and museums that are almost unclassifiable. The Potato Museum in Prince Edward Island the Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis come to mind. I live in one of the most museum-rich cities in the world and yet, last year I probably made six visits to museums and two were for work events. I saw very little of the art on those trips. We were at the Brooklyn Museum twice. I planned to return to see the exhibitions and the year went by and I didn't get there.

2011 will be different. We'll be going to museums. My goal is to visit a museum at least once a month. I am in easy walking distance of the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Historical Society, so there's no reason for this dearth of visits.  And it's going to be we! I'll share photos and let you know what I've seen.

Anyone else a museum fan? What are some of your favorite museums to visit?  Looking forward to sharing my adventures in museum going with all of you.

I'll be looking forward to your visits and seeing all the sites. I do enjoy museums and since I've not been to yours I'm sure there will be many things I've never seen before. I hope your Wednesday is a wonderful one!

Count me in with the others who anxiously await these posts. We don't get out very often and blogging allows me to learn and see so much. Have a great day.

Sorry about the deleted comment...it had a typo..here it is corrected:

When ever I visit a new city I always try to see at least one museum, but it's true we can take the ones in our own city for granted. I have a membership to MoMa ( Museum of Modern Art) in Manhattan that will expire in June, and I only used it once! I had a foot fracture soon after I bought the membership, and I was sidelined awhile, but still that is no excuse. You are lucky to live so close to the Met and M of NH! It's a long subway ride for me, but the Brooklyn Museum is only a short bus ride. I love their Egyptian collection!

Awesome! I have a question. We have been told there is a Schenck Museum in NY. Doug's mother's family are/were the Schenck's. Doug and I would love to visit it sometime. Do you know of any such museum?

Hope you are having an awesome New Year. Doug and I are still trying to fight off a respiratory bug!

Blessings, hugs, and prayers,
andrea

At the risk of sounding like the teacher that I am, I've always wanted to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Why? Because Claudia and Jamie camped out there in the children's book "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". I've heard there are organized trips to read the book and visit the museum.

I love museums, especially history ones. We don't have many around here, but I loved visiting the Smithsonian museums in high school.
