Sixty Years Ago Today...

I love history. I love learning about history, reading about things that have happened in the past and visiting historic sites. I took two years of American History in high school and more history than I could describe in college -- Art History, English History, Church History and lots of assorted European History. To keep up with my interest in remembering history I am beginning a new and sporadic blog feature, "Years Ago Today." From time to time I will focus on an event that happened exactly a given number of years from the day I post. My first "Years Ago Today" took place sixty years ago today, the start of the Korean War.

These two sidewalk plaques commemorate two parades that took place on Broadway -- the "Canyon of Heroes" at different times after the Korean War. I was walking up Broadway tonight on the way to dinner and came upon these markers. I couldn't capture the year -- my memory is 1953 -- but they seemed ideal to mark this moment in history.

My hope is in six days, six years, sixty years there will be no more mention of wars. But tonight this is the moment in history that we capture exactly sixty years ago today.

Great Pot Buttercup:) I loved history at school and so wish we learnt more from the history of war. There are no winners only losers in the bloodshed of battle no matter where it takes place.

What a great idea! I have many cousins and other fellow employees that were veterans of this war. Another war where our soldiers were so far from home and we need to remember our veterans of this and all wars. Thank you for this post.

I agree.. that sometime in the future there will be no mention of wars...

These days, my "history" seems to be wrapped up in family events: 12 years ago today, I married Tim in an absolute downpour on the college campus where we met. Best decision I ever made.

This is a nice tribute and it would be wonderful if that would be true in sixty years!

it would sure be nice if warfare remained in the past.

Hi Sweetie...
What a wonderful post here. I love it when you share history, as that is your deepest love.

I hope next year we can meet again when I come home to see Marydon and Harold. I so enjoyed my time with you, however it is never long enough. You know how that goes.

I am reading my books and so enjoying my Burt's Bees. I love that stuff. You have me hooked for sure.

Hope you are having a great weekend. Say, don't you have a birthday coming soon? Have I already missed it? I have been out of so many loops since I got sick. Time gets away from you, ya know?

I love you sweetie. I did go back and sign up for the Funky Monkey giveaway. What wonderful snacks those must be. I gotta try them.

Many hugs and much love, Sherry
