Soldiers and Sailors Memorial

On the beautiful almost spring day last Saturday I spent some time in Riverside Park. It's literally a block from my building, but I usually go towards Central Park, which is four blocks away. Riverside Park is the "local" park, not famous, but well populated with walkers, runners, folks walking dogs and lots and lots of children playing.
The view across the river to New Jersey

I enter the park at 89th St and each time I see the memorial to the Union fallen of the Civil War, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. Until I took pictures to share I had no idea of its history. But thanks to Google, I discovered that it was built in 1902 and the owner of the mansion across the street sued the City of New York, under the premise that the memorial would block her view.

This shows the names of the battles on one of the sculptures adjoining the main monument

Hope you enjoyed sharing spring in New York City, especially in my corner of Manhattan, the Upper West Side. So happy you could join me!

So people sued in 1902? I think they should be happy that they had something so memorable in front of their home!

It was beautiful. The weather looks good too.

Hi Buttercup Sweetie...
Thank you so much for sharing with me today. I love your History lessons.

This monument is beautiful, can you imagine someone being angry enough to sue over something as beautiful and meaningful as this monument?

You are so lucky to have such beautiful architecture around you where you can go. I could sit in this park for hours I believe watching the people go by. I am a people watcher for sure. Love it.

Thank you for sharing my friend. Have a beautiful Tuesday. Country hugs...Sherry

your city is so rich in history. I love your blog. What happened to your snow - all melted already? It's getting warmer here, but still snow on the ground and piles.

I do appreciate your sharing the beautiful sights there for sure. I'm an armchair traveler and love being able to see things I'd never get to see other wise. The pictures are so nice and I love seeing the blue sky too! We have also been blessed with some of that here and the snow is melting! Have a terrific Tuesday!
