When I stopped at Target today -- both to pick up a few groceries and to enjoy the air conditioning -- I was ready for the above. I totally expected an array of Halloween goodies. But I was so not ready for what greeted me when I got off the elevator in search of pumpkins.
I was so not ready for this display!
Yes, I know that Thanksgiving follows Halloween, but it's just not the time of the season for the full (or not quite full) Thanksgiving display, especially when the sidewalks of New York City are hotter than the inside of a pizza oven. It's still summer here -- heat index of 94 -- both in terms of temperature and season. I've even got a weekend at the beach upcoming and the weather should definitely be beach weather, even if it's ten degrees cooler than today.
But before Halloween my season of holidays begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. My plans are in place, but there are always last minute things I want/need to do, and the holiday begins in just ten days. Before Halloween and before Thanksgiving, the time of the season -- as the song goes -- will be Rosh Hashanah, also a time to give thanks. Perhaps my favorite prayer is the Shehechyanu, recited in gratitude the first time one does something each year.
"Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season."
As ever, thanks for visiting. Take care and enjoy every season in its own beautiful time.

I LOVE the prayer! Many of us don't give thanks enough and often take for granted the everyday blessings we have. I am one who is guilty of that. You have probably seen on FB where someone has written, "What if the only things we have today are the things we thanked God for yesterday?"
I know that sounds extreme - - like you would say a prayer for everything you see around you - - but it is still a great reminder.
Thank you for your post.
Tis the season on giving for sure. No matter giving treats for Halloween or giving Thanks on Thanksgiving. What ever we give a way returns to us double fold. You can't give without receiving too. It is cooling down here and beach season is coming to a close. By the weekend we'lll be in the low 70's, I love summer and hate to see it go!
Hi Carol. I love that prayer of gratitude! I hope your temperatures cool down soon. We are only getting up into the 80s here this week, and it feels great. Happy September to you!
I love the prayer of gratitude! Retailers seem to be ahead of the seasons at times, though I will confess that I bought Thanksgiving crackers at World Market last week!
I really hate to see seasonal things out too early. It puts me in a bad mood. Can't we enjoy the season we're in instead of rushing to the next one. I LOVE summer and I don't even want to think about Fall or anything connected to it. Surprised you didn't see heavy coats. It's definitely still summer, hot, humid and pool and beach time. LONG LIVE SUMMER. Lovely prayer!!
