On the Twenty Sixth Day of December

We're celebrating National Candy Cane Day today

I was thinking of taking a blog break today, but this morning I was making some blog visits and found this post from our friend, Ma, who posts at On the Bright Side. Her post today featured National Candy Cane Day, and since there are three candy cane fans in Buttercupland, I decided to honor the candy of the season. Thanks, Ma, you inspired me.

The candy cane began in 1670 in Cologne, Germany. Candy canes, shaped like shepherds' crooks were given to the youngest singers to keep them quiet during the Living Creche. Candy canes arrived in America with German immigrants and they were first used for decoration in the 1840's. The candy cane in America really gained popularity after the invention of a machine the automated the process of candy cane making in the 1950's.

I know this is somewhat heretical, but our first choice in candy cane flavor isn't peppermint. Little Harry is a fan of wintergreen -- a giveaway from one of our local bank branches -- and Pep and Baby Yo are enjoying fruit flavored candy canes. They're cherry flavored and quite tasty.

I'm not sure about you, but I'm tired. I'm going to use this week to catch up on getting the apartment (more) in order, catching up on bills and paperwork and enjoying the snowmen and holiday decor. I usually leave it all out well into January, but this year I'm feeling that by New Year's it's time to move the snowmen to their year-round homes. When do you take down your decorations?

I've also been thinking about projects for 2023. I've chosen my "word" for 2023 and plan to post it sometime this week. Is anyone else doing a word for the new year?

As ever, thanks for visiting and keep cozy.

Every year I buy candy canes and put some on the tree but we never enjoy them. This year, I bought a package and included a candy cane in each package of homemade cookies given out. There was one remaining, which is now on the tree.

Decorations stay inside and outside the apt until at least the first week in January and then snowmen decos are used for exterior apt decos.

Best wishes to you, Carol, for a wonderful 2023.

I would be ready to take decorations down this week but for reasons unusual - - helping a friend with late Christmas gift giving, ours are up until the New Year. I am ready for them to be gone though.
Before I ended up with dairy allergy due to alpha-gal allergy, I loved to melt a candy cane in hot cocoa. As for eating a candy cane, I prefer the round mints occasionally instead.

Thank you ! I'm glad to have been able to inspire your post! There are so many different flavors of candy canes. there is sure to be one to suit everyone !I'm off on a trip for a winter break here and will be sharing some of my adventures for a change. Putting things in order will have to wait until I get back. Now I have to think about what my word for 2023 will be. New Years is coming fast.

We don't put decorations up so we have no need to take them down. All the very best for 2023. I shall look forward to learning about your new word for the year.

Candy Cane day? Who knew? Love 'em! And you're not alone -- I'm exhausted, too. I've hardly touched the computer in over a week so Merry Winter Holidays and In-Between Week to you!
